GS certification and development work

PRIORIT has developed a brand new safety storage cabinet specifically for the active and passive storage of lithium-ion batteries in accordance with the GS test principle EK5/AK4 22-01. The cabinet has successfully passed tests and received the GS mark, which confirms its suitability for the safe storage of new and used batteries.

The most important facts about the EK5/AK4 22-01 test principle at a glance:

• The standardization of the test principles for safety storage cabinets for the storage of lithium batteries is based on commercially available complete batteries
• Tightening of the requirements compared to EN 14470-1 in the event of fire from outside (temperature increase max. 100 K instead of 180 K for safety storage cabinets)
• The doors may have a maximum closing delay of 10 seconds. Permanent holding open is not permitted
• All internal surfaces and built-in equipment must be non-combustible
• The heat lost during the loading process must be dissipated. Heat calculation according to EN 61439-1
• The air exchange must be dimensioned so that 60°C is not exceeded inside the cabinet.
• The escape of hazardous gases must be prevented. Ventilation valves require a flame arrester
• The status of the valves must be indicated from the outside
• A floor drip tray with a capacity of at least 1 liter must be available to collect any electrolytes that are released
• Stricter requirements for cable penetrations

Fire resistance and room closure

The GS-certified PRIOLION safety storage cabinet offers an impressive fire resistance of 90 minutes both from the inside and outside. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN 14470-1:2004-07 by means of a fire test from the outside to the inside. Under more demanding conditions, the temperature inside the cabinet may only rise by a maximum of 100 Kelvin after 90 minutes when exposed to fire from the outside, which minimizes the risk of thermal runaway of the stored batteries in the event of a fire.

Smoke tightness and safety features

In view of the high fire risk of lithium-ion batteries, the GS test principle stipulates that certified products must guarantee a 90-minute room closure in accordance with DIN EN 1363-2:1999-10. The PRIOLION cabinet therefore eliminates the risk to the environment for at least 90 minutes in the event of a fire inside.

Another outstanding feature of the GS-tested PRIOLION cabinet is its smoke-tightness. The system also has an active fan ex works, which would switch off automatically in the event of a fire.

Three-point locking and temperature control

The PRIOLION enclosure's permanent three-point locking system meets the GS test requirements and guarantees maximum safety. The test principle also requires proof of compliance with heating limits in accordance with DIN EN 61439, which is realized by an intelligent ventilation control system in the PRIOLION enclosure. This process effectively dissipates the heat generated when charging the batteries from the cabinet. Indicator lights on the control unit provide important information about the status inside the enclosure even when the doors are closed. The fan switches off in the event of a fire.

Alarm function and emergency protection

The PRIOLION cabinet is equipped with a potential-free alarm contact that can be used to send warning messages to a control center. In the event of an emergency, a complete shutdown of the cabinet's power supply provides additional protection.

Material & surface

The safety storage cabinets are characterized by high-quality materials and versatile surfaces. The standard surface is made of CPL (Continuous Pressure Laminate), a non-combustible panel with a surface coating. This panel is classified as non-combustible in accordance with classification A2 - s1, d0, which guarantees the highest safety standards.

The standard surface is finished in an attractive light gray color similar to RAL 7035. This not only gives the safety storage cabinet a modern look, but also ensures good visibility in the surroundings.

Tested fire resistance

The safety cabinet offers a tested fire resistance of 90 minutes from the outside to the inside in accordance with DIN EN 14470-1. This minimizes the risk of thermal runaway of the stored batteries in the event of a fire. The maximum temperature increase in the interior does not exceed 100 K at any temperature measuring point.

Optional fire suppression system provides additional safety

The optional fire suppression system can further increase the scope for action in the event of a fire. An aerosol is sprayed into the cabinet, which can intervene in the chemical process of the fire to suppress the fire even further.

The cabinet also meets the requirements of DIN EN 1363-2 and offers a tested fire resistance of 90 minutes from the inside to the outside.

Permanently function-tested, self-closing doors

The doors of the cabinet are not only self-closing, but have also undergone a long-term function test to ensure their reliability.
