Safe storage of e-bike batteries in fireproof boxes, containers and bags

The share of e-bikes and pedelecs in the number of bicycles sold is increasing all the time and what used to be the preserve of the older generation now knows no age limit. Even mountain bikes, racing bikes and much more are becoming increasingly popular as battery-powered versions. What many owners of e-bikes and pedelecs often forget: With the e-bike battery, you not only get a "built-in tailwind", but also a high-performance power pack with a high energy density that reacts sensitively if stored incorrectly or handled carelessly. Quite a few e-bike batteries have already caused fires and extinguishing battery fires is often problematic. Accordingly, e-bike batteries should be stored safely and properly in order to minimize the dangers of a lithium battery from the outset.

Suitable storage boxes and bags for e-bike batteries

With the right container, you not only increase the service life of the battery by protecting it from environmental influences, but you also directly reduce the risk of fire that can be caused by an e-bike battery or the dangers that arise for people and the environment if an e-bike battery explodes.

Simple battery bag or robust battery storage box?

If you are looking for a suitable storage option, you will quickly come across two options: On the one hand, relatively inexpensive battery bags are on offer. However, these primarily serve as a simple packaging option and protect the battery from external influences such as weather or dirt. However, these bags generally cannot provide fire protection in the event of a battery defect or the necessary safety from the dangers of a Li-ion battery, or only inadequately. In this case, special storage boxes for e-bike batteries should be used, which are equipped with appropriate granules to ensure safe storage. It is also advisable to have a suitable battery fire extinguisher to hand so that you can take immediate countermeasures in the event of a battery fire.

Storage boxes for e-bike batteries

Depending on the type of battery to be stored and the number of e-bikes whose lithium batteries are to be stored, different boxes and crates are available. The Zarges K470 battery safe is an established classic in this area, but other manufacturers also offer suitable storage boxes, such as Genius with the Lio-Guard boxes or Priorit with the Priopack battery storage container.

B&W LI-ION CARRY & STORE transport case type 6040 for e-bike batteries

The LI-ION CARRY & STORE e-bike battery case from B&W has been specially developed for storing e-bike batteries, although it can also be used for storing and transporting other lithium-ion batteries. The internal dimensions of the battery case are designed to easily store two standard-sized e-bike batteries in the battery box. Private users in particular are increasingly looking for a safe, easy-to-use and attractively priced option for storing e-bike batteries. With the LI-ION CARRY & STORE Type 6040 transport case, B&W has now created the opportunity to guarantee this in the private sector. In addition to private users, LI-ION CARRY & STORE battery transport cases are also used in the commercial sector, e.g. by bicycle dealers, who use this storage container to ensure safe transportation when delivering individual e-bike batteries, for example. The Cirrux cushions supplied provide the e-bike batteries with both mechanical protection against impact and a fire-retardant effect in the event of problems with the battery.

Genius Lio Guard boxes for e-bike batteries

The battery boxes from Genius offer the right solution for many applications: available in different sizes and equipped with the well-known Pyrobubbles, they can be used to store e-bike batteries of different types and capacities. The Genius battery boxes are also very attractively priced and are therefore very popular with both commercial and private users.

Priorit Priopack boxes for e-bike batteries

The Priorit boxes are designed in a similar way to the Genius boxes and combine great flexibility with a high level of reliability and safety for storing e-bike batteries. With the specially developed Priopack filling agents, they offer comprehensive protection against the dangers that can emanate from an e-bike battery.

ZARGES K 470 - Battery safe for e-bike batteries

The K470 battery safe from Zarges is an established classic in the field of battery storage in general and also specifically for e-bike batteries. Similar to the LI-ION Carry & STORE battery case from B&W described above, the battery safe from Zarges is used by both private individuals and bicycle dealers to store and transport e-bike batteries in order to minimize the potential dangers posed by these energy cells. Zarges uses Cirrux cushions to equip the fireproof e-bike battery box. This specially developed, fire-resistant cushioning and absorbent material made of textured glass fibers safely embeds the e-bike batteries packed in it and can have a fire-retardant effect in the event of a battery fire. Leaking liquids are also absorbed.

In many cases, these are an attractively priced alternative to the often rather expensive storage boxes and containers for e-bike batteries, especially for private individuals.

Important parameters for the safe storage of e-bike batteries

Three factors play a particularly important role when storing e-bike batteries over a longer period of time, as they have a significant influence on the integrity and performance retention of a lithium-ion battery:

The best temperature range for storing a Li-ion battery is between 5-20°C. In winter, when batteries are often stored over a longer period of time, care should be taken to ensure that they are no longer stored outside in very cold temperatures, but in a cellar room, for example. The same applies in summer: If the temperatures in the garage or where the e-bike is parked rise sharply or if the battery may even be exposed to direct sunlight (which should be avoided at all costs), the battery should also be stored in the cellar. It is advisable to use suitable storage containers for e-bike batteries to minimize the risk to the environment in the event of problems.

The ideal charge level for stored e-bike batteries - between 30 and 60%

If you are planning to store an e-bike or pedelec battery for a longer period of time, for example over the winter, you should also keep an eye on the battery's state of charge in addition to the temperature described above. Ideally, a battery should not be completely discharged, nor should it have a full charge. With heavily discharged batteries, there is a risk of deep discharge, which can lead to battery damage; with (almost) fully charged batteries, possible battery problems lead to much stronger thermal reactions than with weakly charged batteries. In general, a charge level of 30-60% is considered optimal. Regardless of the state of charge, it is also highly recommended to store the e-bike in a suitable storage container.

The third important factor in the proper and safe storage of e-bike batteries is protection from the weather. Moisture / humidity in particular can damage an e-bike battery and should therefore be avoided at all costs during long-term storage. Common storage containers such as the Zarges battery safe or the B&W LI-ION CARRY & STORE transport case type 6040 provide efficient protection for the Li-ion batteries, even if the environment is not always completely dry. Even storage in a garage or a basement with a tendency to moisture does not always provide optimum storage conditions, but these can be significantly improved with the appropriate storage boxes, thus extending the service life of the battery.
