PAUL MÜLLER HAVARIEBOX GEN2 – Compact protection for faulty small lithium-powered devices

Numerous mobile devices with lithium batteries are used every day at fire stations, in industrial facilities and in public institutions. If batteries show signs of fault or are damaged, a fire hazard can quickly arise. The Havariebox Gen2 from PAUL MÜLLER offers a compact solution for the safe storage and transport of such small devices – such as smartphones, rechargeable torches or laptops.

The lockable lid confines the spread of fire to the interior of the box. At the same time, the specially designed vent in the lid, featuring an integrated filter medium, drastically minimises the escape of smoke and venting gases. This allows a faulty battery to react in a controlled manner without the risk spreading to the outside.

Technical specifications and dimensions

The box measures 600 mm in length, 400 mm in width and 400 mm in height externally. The internal dimensions are approximately 530 mm in length, 330 mm in width and 335 mm in height, corresponding to a volume of approximately 58.6 litres. The weight, excluding the extinguishing agent, is approximately 23.5 kg. The steel box is powder-coated in RAL 3020 (signal red) and features a thermally insulating inner lining.

Safe pressure relief and UN approval

The Havariebox Gen2 is fitted with a defined pressure relief system via the filter medium in the lid, which allows for the controlled release of excess pressure, smoke and gases. The box has UN approval for safe transport. The box can be used for lithium batteries up to 1,000 Wh and is fitted with the relevant labelling, including the UN approval number and the ‘Battery Emergency’ and ‘Emergency Box’ stickers. In addition, instructions for use are affixed to the box.

Versatile use in the fire service, industry and public administration

The compact design allows it to be loaded onto an emergency vehicle or stored in a space-saving manner in the equipment store. In industrial settings, the boxes are kept at designated locations or, where necessary, transported to the scene of an incident by in-house fire brigades. The emergency response boxes are also established as an effective immediate measure in the event of lithium incidents in administrative buildings and public facilities.

Extover extinguishing granules for enhanced safety

The box can be fitted with 2 x 2.7 kg bags of Extover dry extinguishing agent. This special extinguishing agent, made from expanded glass granules, is non-flammable, can be reused – provided it has not been affected by a fire – and is generally recyclable. It displaces oxygen, binds gases and vapours, and thus supports safe firefighting and disposal. Two 2.7 kg bags are included in the price!

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
