Product information „Techno-Physik RACLAN Square DefPro Box – Loading and storage box“

Brief overview

The Techno-Physik RACLAN Square DefPro Box is a safety box for the storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries, both indoors and outdoors. It has been specially developed for use in military and police environments and is suitable for holding lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to 3.5 kWh.

The box features an integrated, redundant cooling system. If a critical rise in temperature is detected inside, the charging process is automatically interrupted, the coolant is released and an alarm signal is triggered simultaneously. The box can be connected to a fire alarm system via a dry contact.

The robust design is intended for mobile and stationary use in demanding environmental conditions. The frame is made of aluminium, whilst screws, fittings and other relevant components are manufactured from V4A stainless steel. This makes the box suitable for military field operations under specific environmental conditions, such as exposure to salt water or sand.

Thanks to its compact design, the RACLAN Square DefPro Box is suitable, amongst other things, for the secure storage and charging of batteries for communication devices, tactical equipment, night-vision devices, drones and other battery-powered operational equipment.

To meet specific operational requirements, the box is available in various military colour schemes with a matt finish. Optionally, the finish can be provided with IR-absorbing or IR-protective properties.

Safety and protection functions

The RACLAN Square DefPro Box’s protection concept is based on an automatic response to a critical rise in temperature inside the box.

If a critical temperature rise is detected, three functions are automatically triggered:

  1. Interruption of the charging function
  2. Release of the coolant
  3. Activation of the alarm signal

The integrated cooling system is designed with redundancy and operates without pressurised gas. 10 litres of special coolant are available for cooling.

A connection to the fire alarm system can be established via the existing dry contact. This allows the alarm signal to be integrated into an existing safety infrastructure.

The internal rechargeable 12 V LiFePO4 battery provides the system’s internal power supply for up to 90 days.

Applications

The RACLAN Square DefPro Box is designed for applications where lithium-ion batteries need to be stored and charged safely. Due to its design and choice of materials, the DefPro variant is particularly suited for use in military and police environments.

The aluminium frame construction and components made from V4A stainless steel allow it to be used even under extreme environmental conditions, such as in the presence of salt water or sand.

Possible applications include:

  • Military and Defence
  • Military field and outdoor operations
  • Police and security agencies
  • Operational and communications equipment
  • Batteries for radio and communications equipment
  • Batteries for night-vision and surveillance equipment
  • Drone and UAV batteries
  • Batteries for mobile electronic operational equipment

Testing / Certification

TÜV NORD test programme M 02/22 (P12FM 2022 002)

Optional versions

Various military colour schemes with a matt finish are available to suit different operational requirements.

The RACLAN Square DefPro Box is optionally available with a finish made from IR-absorbing material or an IR-protective coating. This allows the model to be adapted to meet relevant requirements in the defence sector.

Conclusion

The Techno-Physik RACLAN Square DefPro Box combines charging and storage functions with an automatic protection system for lithium-ion batteries up to 3.5 kWh, including a charger. In the event of a critical rise in temperature, the charging process is interrupted, the integrated coolant is released and an alarm is triggered.

The aluminium frame construction, components made from V4A stainless steel and the matt finish are designed for use in the defence sector and under demanding environmental conditions. For specific requirements, the box is optionally available with an IR-absorbing finish.

FAQ

That depends on various factors that need to be considered:

  • size of the battery(ies)
  • condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
  • power

Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

If you want to learn more about battery storage and transportation, you will find the answers in our blog articles:

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
