Dimensions and function of the Raclan-Box II

This battery charging box has external dimensions of 580 x 380 x 380 mm (L x W x H). It weighs between 22 and 25 kg (including fire-extinguishing agent, depending on the model).  The interior dimensions of the charging box are 540 x 340 x 200 mm.

The lithium batteries are placed inside the box together with the chargers and connected. The front flap is then securely closed. The power supply can then be switched on, and a monitoring system controls the charging process and the interior of the box.

If the system detects a rise in temperature or smoke, it immediately triggers a visual and audible alarm. In the event of an alarm, the non-pressurised fire-suppression system sprays an environmentally friendly extinguishing and cooling agent over the batteries (the extinguishing cartridge activates at 90°C or above), thereby putting out the fire. Filters direct the resulting mixture of smoke and gas into the exhaust gas management system, ensuring that no toxic substances can escape to the outside. The waste heat is vented via the side exhaust vents. 2 sockets, each rated at 230 V are available

In the ceiling of the box, you will find two 230 V sockets for connecting your chargers.

Techno-Physik Raclan Box II - Hydrogen explosion simulation

A hydrogen explosion in a lithium-ion battery can cause pressure peaks of up to 7.2 bar inside a safety container. This accelerates individual battery cells to speeds of up to 300 m/s. By way of comparison: a 9mm bullet reaches 360 m/s. This means that battery cells become red-hot (+600°C) projectiles. This is the maximum load that a RACLAN Box II must withstand. Specially developed frame geometries and ballistic composite materials are used for the boxes’ casings.

For risk and damage analyses of the structures of our RACLAN Boxes, the effects of impact and shock wave loads are determined in advance using numerical simulations. Here is an extract from one such simulation. Calculating these simulations is highly complex and takes several days.

Only once these simulations confirm that the RACLAN boxes successfully withstand the hydrogen explosion and that fire protection and leak-tightness are maintained 100 per cent does the next phase begin, namely the explosion and fire tests in a fire laboratory.

Safety warnings

  • Use exclusively for the storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Full protection is only provided when the unit is completely sealed.
  • Do not store any highly flammable materials in the immediate vicinity.
  • Only use the box up to a maximum total battery capacity of 1754 Wh, or 877 Wh per lithium-ion battery
  • In poorly ventilated premises, a suitable ventilation duct leading to the outside must be connected
  • Charging is only possible when the unit is closed

Maintenance and care

For domestic use, the RACLAN ® Box II is largely maintenance-free. The box can be cleaned inside and out with warm water. For further instructions, please refer to the user manual.

In addition to organised storage when not in use, charging has become increasingly important, as devices can only operate optimally with a fully charged battery; consequently, combined storage and charging solutions are indispensable for businesses and public sector clients. Rechargeable battery charging boxes combine precisely these two functions: they enable the storage and simultaneous charging of the batteries. The box is powered externally at 100–230 V / 50–60 Hz and features an internal rechargeable 12 V LiFePO₄ battery, enabling flexible and independent use even without a direct mains power supply.

VDS recommendation for the storage of Li-ion batteries

There are as yet no legal regulations governing the storage of lithium batteries / lithium-ion batteries. Only VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH provides general safety rules for damage prevention in its publication VdS 3103: 2019-06 (03). It is advisable to clarify your requirements with your property insurer in advance.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
