Product information „BUNCKER ® Transport and storage container Pro Line Heavy L“

Lithium batteries are used in a wide range of applications and are becoming increasingly popular due to their high energy density and long service life. However, it is important to note that although lithium batteries are generally safe when used properly, they do pose some risks, including the danger of thermal runaway.

Given the potential hazards posed by lithium batteries, safe and certified packaging for transport, storage and handling is essential. BUNCKER ® has developed a patented packaging solution to mitigate risks and provide protection in the event of thermal runaway or other incidents. The patented fireproof, insulating and filtering material, known as "Altilium", and the mechanisms for controlled containment and venting of gases are designed to contain thermal runaway that can occur in lithium batteries. As BUNCKER ® can protect both non-critical and critical lithium batteries, these systems offer a versatile solution.

The transport of critical lithium-ion batteries in particular continues to pose a major challenge. The storage and transport container was developed for the safe transport of critically defective lithium-ion batteries. Unlike comparable metal boxes in packaging group I, no filling material is required here. This makes this container the ideal solution for internal storage and transport in all battery conditions. The container has been tested and meets the requirements of ADR/Packaging Instruction LP 906. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Size and capacity of the battery transport container - Approved for lithium-ion batteries up to 90 kWh.

The transport container has external dimensions of approx. 2000 x 1200 x 950 mm (LxWxH). The interior dimensions of the box are 1720 x 880 x 550 mm (LxWxH), which corresponds to a capacity of approximately 830 litres. It is also approved as large steel packaging (LP) in accordance with packaging group I. The sturdy base frame can be accessed from all four sides using industrial trucks. The transport container weighs approximately 536 kg. The maximum permissible capacity is approximately 700 kg. This corresponds to a permissible total weight of 1236 kg. Size L is approved for transporting lithium-ion batteries up to 90 kWh. Please contact us regarding approval if the container is to be used for this purpose: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.

Application of the BUNCKER ® Pro Line Heavy L transport and storage container

To load the container

,

first open the side panels and release the clamps. The cover can then be lifted with a forklift truck. The batteries can then be placed on the base plate for loading. There is a non-conductive mat on the plate. The batteries themselves can be secured with tension straps. The cover can then be easily replaced, the clamps closed and the side panels folded down. Please refer to the instructional video in the "Downloads" tab.

The container can also be stacked during storage to make the most efficient use of space.

Contents of UN certification

UN certification is an important aspect of BUNCKER ® , as it indicates that the packaging meets the safety standards set by the United Nations for the transport of dangerous goods. This certification ensures that the product has passed a fire, leak and drop test, as well as a worst-case scenario assessment, to ensure that it effectively contains and prevents the hazards associated with lithium batteries. The tests and assessments prove that BUNCKER ® can contain thermal runaway.

If defective or damaged batteries need to be packaged, UN approval based solely on drop and stack tests is not sufficient for shipping in accordance with P911/LP906, additional certification is required to confirm that the packaging complies with the following parameters :

  • Withstands a worst-case scenario fire test
  • No leakage
  • The container has a well-functioning gas management system
  • High heat resistance must be ensured

These criteria must be met based on the maximum tested kWh of the lithium-ion batteries.

Therefore, always request the transport approval certificates in accordance with P911/LP906 certification, which confirm the approved type of packaging instructions, how the batteries are to be secured against slipping, how the box is to be made fireproof, and the consumption limits in kg and kWh for road (ADR), rail (RID) and sea transport (IMDG).

A copy of these certificates should be included with the packaging during transport.

A safe system thanks to the patented Altilium insulation material ®

The BUNCKER ® Pro Line HEAVY is fully equipped with our patented Fibercon Altilium ® CP Blanket (FACB). This innovative product has the potential to filter toxic HF gases. In addition, the FACB has non-combustible, fire-resistant and insulating properties.

Transport instructions

All legal regulations, as well as any labelling and marking requirements

,

must be observed during transport. All handling and transport of the container must be carried out using suitable and safe means. Before transport, ensure that the hood is securely closed to the base frame.

Repair and disposal

Damaged transport containers must not be reused. Repairs may only be carried out by specialists authorised by the manufacturer or by the manufacturer itself. Contaminated components must be disposed of properly in accordance with their contamination level.

Certification and guidelines

Lithium batteries fall under dangerous goods class 9. Numerous specifications and guidelines must therefore be observed when transporting lithium batteries. The transport box has been specially designed to meet the most stringent safety regulations.

Certified for packaging group I

The Pro Line Heavy container meets the requirements of packaging group I, which means that substances with a high risk potential may be transported in it. To achieve this classification, the boxes must withstand drop tests from a height of 1.8 metres. All packaging with the code "X" may be used for packaging groups I (II and III).

Complies with ADR guidelines / packaging instruction LP 906

All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and no longer comply with the applicable regulations in accordance with their manual must comply with the provisions of this special provision. This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or degassed, suffered external or mechanical damage, or have been identified as defective for safety reasons, or could not be diagnosed prior to transport. If it is determined that the lithium-ion cells or batteries could, under normal transport conditions, undergo rapid decomposition, dangerous reaction, flames, dangerous heat generation or a dangerous emission of toxic, corrosive or flammable gases or vapours, these defective cells must then be transported in accordance with packaging instruction P 911 or LP 906. These packaging guidelines then stipulate packaging group I.

Additional test requirements also apply: during a possible accident involving the lithium-ion battery, the surface of the package must never exceed 100°C. Only short-term temperature peaks of up to 200°C are permitted. No flames may form outside the package and no splinters may escape from the package. Furthermore, the structure of the package must be maintained at all times and a gas management system must ensure pressure relief inside. Compliance with the test requirements must be demonstrated by real fire tests

If you would like to use the container for "critically defective" transport according to LP 906, please contact us to obtain the appropriate approval for this transport case: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811 .

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
