Suitable filling material for the battery storage and transport container
The appropriate filling material is required to use the PRIOPACK-T battery container. If you do not have any filling material, please order the version "Incl. 4 x Priopack filling material, 8 pieces each". You can find additional filling material in the Accessories tab.
In buildings and storage facilities where lithium-ion batteries are stored, damaged cells can pose a high risk to employees and to operating and storage equipment. Explosive fires caused by batteries ("thermal runaway") are difficult to control.
Size, design and function of the container
The PRIOPACK-T container is available in two versions. This larger version has external dimensions of 600 x 400 x 235 mm and internal dimensions of 507 x 308 x 144 mm (length x width x height). It weighs 12.4 kg. The container is grey in colour.
90 minutes fire resistance
The container is made of plastic and lined with fire-resistant building boards on the inside, enabling it to remain stable for 90 minutes in the event of a fire.
Sturdy lid with tension lock
The lid is securely closed with tension straps and locking buckles. This type of closure ensures maximum safety during transport. Under the lid is another fire protection panel that seals the interior.
With vermiculite cushions: an additional safety feature
Vermiculite filler packs must be ordered separately for this container. The container can be ordered directly with 4 filler packs. Vermiculite is non-flammable and further insulates the heat energy.
Suitable for transport in accordance with SV 376 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 908
The PRIOPACK-T plastic transport box is specially designed for the transport of damaged or defective lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries. It meets the requirements of Special Provision 376 (SV 376) of the ADR and Packaging Instruction P 908. This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or degassed, show mechanical damage or have been identified as defective for safety reasons. If diagnosis is not possible prior to transport, these regulations also apply.
The PRIOPACK-T ensures that released electrolytes are absorbed and that a non-conductive thermal insulation material protects the environment from dangerous heat build-up.
For storage, transport and recycling in accordance with SV 377 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 909
PRIOPACK-T is also suitable for the transport of lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries for disposal or recycling. In accordance with special provision SV 377 and packaging instruction P 909, packaging guidelines for packaging group II must be observed. In addition, restrictions apply with regard to the nominal energy and weight of the batteries to be transported.
Prototype transport in accordance with SV 310 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 910
For the transport of prototypes of lithium-ionor lithium metal batteries that have not yet passed all UN 38.3 tests, the PRIOPACK-T meets the requirements of special provision SV 310 and packaging instruction P 910. Among other things, these provisions set requirements for packaging safety and dangerous goods dimensions to ensure safe transport.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.
Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.
The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.
To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.
It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.
