Extinguishing fires involving lithium-ion batteries and accumulators remains a major challenge. This fire extinguisher from BAVARIA, the LithiumX extinguisher, was developed to contain all types of metal fires, including those involving lithium-ion batteries.

The lithium fire extinguisher is available in different versions. This is the second smallest version with six litres of extinguishing agent. The extinguisher can be used for batteries with a capacity between 250 and 500 Wh.

Compact battery fire extinguisher for businesses and private individuals

The X6 fire extinguisher from Bavaria has a capacity of 6 litres of extinguishing agent to combat burning batteries. This allows a spray time of approx. 180 seconds with a spray range of 3 m. The Bavaria Lithium-X6 fire extinguisher has external dimensions of 255x155x575 mm and weighs 11.2 kg.

For fighting fires involving lithium batteries and accumulators

The compact dimensions and light weight of the Bavaria X6 lithium fire extinguisher make it very flexible and versatile. Whether for extinguishing a burning e-bike battery, a fire caused by a laptop battery or other battery fires, the extinguisher presented here is quickly at hand and can prevent major damage.

Can also be used to extinguish electrical equipment

In addition to its main area of application, extinguishing all types of battery fires, the Bavaria Lithium X6 fire extinguisher can also be used for other purposes. For example, fires in electrical equipment up to 1000 volts can also be fought, whereby a distance of at least one metre must be maintained during firefighting.

Features and equipment of the Lithium X6 fire extinguisher

The fire extinguishers in the Bavaria Lithium line have been specially developed for fighting battery fires and burning lithium batteries. Both the Lithium X extinguishing agent used and the other features of the Bavaria fire extinguisher are therefore perfectly suited to the hazards posed by rechargeable and other batteries.

Wide temperature range for fighting battery fires

The Bavaria Lithium X6 fire extinguisher can be used in a wide temperature range. It can be used to fight battery fires from +5°C to +60°C.

Handling the lithium fire extinguisher

In order to make the Bavaria fire extinguisher as easy to use as possible for both commercial and private users, the manufacturer has implemented various concepts and features that enable efficient firefighting of battery fires in everyday life. These include, for example, the option of interrupting the extinguishing jet and extinguishing the fire in bursts using the extinguishing gun. A high-quality EPDM hose with fabric insert and extinguishing lance and a single-lever valve made of high-quality, glass fibre-reinforced plastic with aluminium union nut also offer maximum ease of use.

Wall bracket and polyester coating of the Bavaria fire extinguisher

The portable lithium fire extinguisher comes with a sturdy wall bracket as standard and is equipped with a standard stand ring. This means it is always within reach and can be positioned flexibly. The polyester coating of the extinguishing agent container provides excellent and long-lasting corrosion protection. The high-quality plastic inner coating also provides excellent long-term protection against rust.

Extinguishing effect of Lithium X – ideal for fighting battery fires

The Lithium X extinguishing agent can be used for class A and D fires and, in particular, for burning lithium-ion batteries. All types of metal fires can be effectively cooled and the spread of the fire can be contained. The extinguishing agent is an aqueous dispersion in which natural silicon crystals are kept in suspension in an aqueous solution.

Silicon flakes fuse to form a barrier layer and isolate the battery fire

.

When sprayed onto burning metal, the water evaporates and the microscopic silicon flakes swell and fuse to form an impermeable barrier layer. This isolates the fire and immediately reduces the thermal radiation above the barrier layer to below 100°C. The LithiumX extinguisher is able to apply the extinguishing agent in a fine film to the burning material, which immediately fuses into a hard, mineral barrier layer.

Bavaria fire extinguishers for lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries

The manufacturer Bavaria is one of the leading suppliers of fire extinguishers in Germany and offers a range of special models for fighting fires involving rechargeable batteries, energy storage devices and batteries. Depending on individual requirements and intended use, Bavaria has lithium-ion battery fire extinguishers with the gel or lithium-X extinguishing agents described above in its range. The different models are also usually available in various sizes/extinguishing agent contents, so that you can easily find the right products for your needs.

Efficient firefighting of battery fires – increasingly important in the future

Lithium-ion batteries will become indispensable in all industrial and, increasingly, private applications in the coming years. However, if used improperly, the batteries can pose a potential hazard that should not be underestimated during manufacture, storage and transport. By purchasing a suitable fire extinguisher, you can protect yourself from the outset against major financial losses that can result from battery fires, for example.

FAQ

Lithium-ion batteries are not currently assigned to any specific fire class. These batteries consist of various solid and liquid components, which makes a specific classification difficult. Focusing solely on, for example, fire class D is not effective.
There are currently no specific, standardized testing procedures that conclusively prove suitability. All systems sold to us have been tested for suitability through the manufacturers’ internal tests and/or, in some cases, verified by external laboratories. Where clear statements regarding suitability (e.g., maximum energy density) are available, these are included in the product description. Please contact us if you have any doubts or questions.
In most cases, this involves water with various additives. Bavaria’s Water Glue is a gel that adheres exceptionally well to surfaces and also ensures that the areas treated with the gel cannot ignite. The systems from Gloria and Neuruppin consist of water with an extinguishing agent additive (Imprex-C or F500-EA) that alters the properties of the water. These additives change the surface tension of the water, improve penetration depth, and enhance the water’s cooling effect. LithiumX from Bavaria is an aqueous dispersion in which natural silicon crystals are suspended in an aqueous solution. When sprayed onto the burning material, the water evaporates and the microscopic silicon flakes swell and fuse into an impermeable barrier layer. This isolates the fire, and the thermal radiation above the barrier layer immediately drops below 100°C. These systems are also marketed under the alternative designation “AVD.” PyroBubbles: PyroBubbles are small glass beads. In the event of a fire, the granules melt and form a closed, thermally insulating layer around the fire source, thereby depriving it of oxygen. Combustible reaction gases are reduced thanks to the pores in the beads. The high specific heat capacity absorbs thermal energy, and the temperature is lowered due to the cooling effect. Furthermore, combustible material is shielded by the low thermal conductivity. Please note: Active fire suppression with PyroBubbles requires a specific fire protection design.
