Extinguishing agents for battery fires / burning lithium-ion batteries
Defective or damaged lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion batteries for short) and lithium-polymer batteries (LiPo batteries for short) in particular represent a significant source of danger due to their nature and stored energy, which can result in a battery fire. Burning Li-ion batteries are difficult or impossible to extinguish with standard extinguishing agents such as water, CO2, foam or powder. Accordingly, special extinguishing agents have been developed in recent years to combat battery fires, which enable quick and safe firefighting of Li-ion and LiPo batteries, for example when extinguishing e-bike batteries.
Genius PyroBubbles® - an extinguishing agent for acute firefighting and filler during transportation
PyroBubbles® from Genius are a new type of extinguishing agent based on silicon dioxide that has been specially developed for the challenges posed by burning lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries.
Extinguish battery fires with Genius PyroBubbles®
PyroBubbles® are temperature-resistant up to a temperature of approx. 700°C. If a lithium-ion battery catches fire, high temperatures develop and the granulate melts, forming a closed and thermally insulating layer around the source of the fire (Li-ion battery or LiPo battery). The source of the fire is deprived of oxygen, while the porous structure of the PyroBubbles® reduces other reaction gases. In addition, the PyroBubbles® shield flammable material outside the acute source of the fire thanks to their low thermal conductivity. In addition to fires involving lithium-ion batteries / lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, Genius PyroBubbles® are also suitable for extinguishing metal fires.

Fire prevention with PyroBubbles® from Genius
In addition to fighting burning Li-ion and LiPo batteries, PyroBubbles® are also used as a filler in transport containers for lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries. Problems can quickly arise, especially when transporting damaged batteries, in which case the PyroBubbles® act as an extinguishing agent and the battery fire is extinguished directly inside the transport container so that it does not endanger the surrounding area. PyroBubbles® extinguishing agents are used as standard in Lio Guard transport containers, for example, but can of course also be used in battery transport containers from other series or manufacturers.
Properties of PyroBubbles® as an extinguishing agent
Genius PyroBubbles® are an ideal extinguishing agent for lithium-ion batteries and are suitable for flammable substances of fire class D. The average particle size is 2 to 6 mm. The extinguishing agent is water-repellent and age-resistant, so that PyroBubbles from Genius will continue to protect and extinguish even after a long storage period.
Special fire extinguishers for battery fires
Traditional fire extinguishers with CO2, powder or foam only have a limited effect when lithium batteries or LiPo batteries catch fire. Accordingly, fire ex tinguishers for lithium-ion batteries are usually filled with other extinguishing agents to perfectly meet the requirements of a battery fire.
Fire extinguishers for lithium-ion batteries with lithium-X extinguishing agent
The extinguishing agent Lithium-X can be used in fire extinguishers for A-fires and D-fires and in particular against fires involving lithium-ion batteries and LiPo batteries. Other metal fires are also effectively cooled by the lithium-ion fire extinguishers, so that an uncontrolled spread of the battery fire can be prevented. The extinguishing agent is an aqueous dispersion in which natural silicon crystals are kept suspended in an aqueous solution. When sprayed onto burning metal or burning lithium batteries, the water evaporates, the silicon platelets swell and fuse together to form an impermeable barrier.
Gel fire extinguishers with Water-Glue as extinguishing agent
The gel fire extinguishers for battery fires work with a gel-like extinguishing agent, which can be used to fight class A fires and burning lithium-ion batteries / LiPo batteries. The direct cooling effect of the gel and the high heat capacity ensure that heat is extracted from the burning Li-ion battery in the absence of oxygen. Gel fire extinguishers with Water-Glue as the extinguishing agent are primarily used for smaller, less powerful batteries, e.g. for extinguishing e-bike batteries, LiPo batteries used in model making, etc.
Fire extinguishers with pyrobubbles as extinguishing agent
Not only gel or silicon-based fire extinguishers are commonly used for extinguishing batteries, but pyrobubbles can also be used as an active extinguishing agent. The pyrobubble extinguishing granulate developed by Genius is primarily used when transporting Li-ion batteries, for example as a passive extinguishing agent in the battery transport containers. However, Pyrobubbles are also used in specially developed fire extinguishers to actively extinguish fires in rechargeable batteries.
