Product information „BUNCKER® transport and storage containers Pro Line Heavy L“

Lithium batteries are used in a wide range of applications and are increasingly popular due to their high energy density and long service life. It is important to know that lithium batteries, when used properly, are generally safe but still pose some risks, including the danger of thermal runaway.

Given the potential hazards associated with lithium batteries, safe and certified packaging for transport, storage, and handling is essential. BUNCKER® has developed a patented packaging solution to mitigate the risks and provide protection in the event of a thermal runaway or other incidents. The patented fire-resistant, insulating and filtering material, known as “Altilium,” and the mechanisms for controlled containment and venting of gases are aimed at limiting thermal runaway, which can occur with lithium batteries. As BUNCKER® can protect both non-critical and critical lithium batteries, these systems offer a versatile solution.

Particularly the transport of critical lithium-ion batteries continues to pose a major challenge. The storage and transport container was developed for the safe transport of critically defective lithium-ion cells. Unlike comparable metal boxes in Packaging Group I, no filling material is required here. This makes this container the ideal solution for internal storage and transport of batteries in all states. The container has been tested and meets the ADR/Packaging Instruction LP 906 requirements. Please contact us if you have any questions: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.

Size and capacity of the Battery Transport Container - Approved for lithium-ion batteries up to 90 kWh.

The transport container has outer dimensions of approximately 2000 x 1200 x 950 mm (LxWxH). Inside the box, the dimensions are 1720 x 880 x 550 mm (LxWxH), which corresponds to a capacity of about 830 liters. It also has an approval as a Packaging Group I large packaging made of steel (LP). The sturdy base frame is accessible on four sides for forklifts. The empty weight of the transport container is about 536 kg. The maximum permissible load is about 700 kg. This corresponds to a permissible gross weight of 1236 kg. For size L, it is permissible to transport lithium-ion batteries up to 90 kWh. Please contact us regarding the approval if the container is used for this purpose: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.

Application of the BUNCKER® Pro Line Heavy L Transport and Storage Container

To load the container, first open the side panels and release the clamps. Then the lid can be raised with a forklift. The batteries can then be placed onto the baseplate for loading. A non-conductive mat is located on the plate. The batteries themselves can be secured with tie-down straps. After that, the lid can be simply reseated, the clamps closed, and the side panels closed. Please refer to the instruction video in the Downloads tab for details.

The container can also be stacked during storage to maximize space efficiency.

Contents of UN Certification

UN certification is an important aspect of BUNCKER®, as it indicates that the packaging meets the safety standards set by the United Nations for the transport of dangerous goods. This certification ensures that the product has passed a fire, leak, and drop test as well as an assessment in the worst-case scenario to ensure it effectively contains and prevents the hazards associated with lithium batteries. The tests and evaluations show that BUNCKER® can contain a thermal runaway.

When defective or damaged batteries must be packed, a UN designation based solely on drop and stack tests is not sufficient. For shipping in accordance with P911/LP906, an additional certification is required confirming that the packaging complies with the following parameters:

  • Withstand a worst-case scenario fire test
  • No leakage
  • The container has a well-functioning gas management system
  • High heat resistance must be provided

These criteria must be met based on the maximum, tested kWh of the lithium-ion batteries mentioned.

Therefore, always request the transport certificates for P911/LP906 certification that confirms the approved type of packaging instruction, how the batteries should be secured against shifting, how the container should be made fireproof, and the consumption limits in kg and kWh for road (ADR), rail (RID), and sea transport (IMDG).

A copy of these certificates should accompany the packaging during transport.

A Safe System Thanks to the Patent-Pending Insulation Material Altilium®

The BUNCKER® Pro Line HEAVY is fully equipped with our patented Fibercon Altilium® CP Blanket (FACB). This innovative product has the potential to filter toxic HF gases. In addition, the FACB is non-combustible, fire-resistant and insulating.

Transport notes

All legal regulations, as well as any markings and labeling, must be observed during transport. All handling operations and transports of the container must be carried out using appropriate and safe equipment. Before transport, ensure that the lid is securely closed to the base frame.

Repair and disposal

Damaged transport containers must not be reused. Repairs may only be performed by manufacturer-authorized personnel or by the manufacturer itself. Contaminated components must be disposed of in accordance with their level of contamination.

Certification and Guidelines

Lithium batteries fall under dangerous goods class 9. When transporting lithium batteries, numerous regulations and guidelines must be followed. The transport case is specifically designed for the strictest safety requirements.

Certified for Packaging Group I

The Pro Line Heavy container meets the requirements of Packaging Group I, meaning substances with high hazard potential may be transported in it. To achieve this classification, the boxes must withstand drop tests from a height of 1.8 m. All packages with the code “X” may be used for Packaging Groups I (II and III).

Complies with ADR / LP 906 Packaging Instructions

All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and no longer conform to the applicable provisions of their manual must comply with the provisions of this Special Provision. This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or vented, suffered external or mechanical damage, or have been identified as defective for safety reasons or could not be diagnosed prior to transport. If it is determined that lithium-ion cells or batteries could, under normal transport conditions, tend to rapid disassembly, dangerous reaction, flame formation, dangerous heat development, or emission of toxic, corrosive, or flammable gases or vapors, these defective cells must be transported in accordance with packing instruction P 911 or LP 906. These packaging guidelines then prescribe Packaging Group I.

Additional testing requirements also apply: during a potential incident of the lithium-ion battery, the surface of the packaging must never exceed 100°C. Only short-term temperature peaks up to 200°C are allowed. No flames may form outside the packaging, and no fragments may escape from the packaging. Furthermore, the packaging's structure must be maintained at all times and a gas management system must provide internal pressure relief. Compliance with the testing requirements must be demonstrated by real-fire tests.

If you want to use the container for the transport scenario "critically defective" under LP 906, please contact us to obtain the corresponding approval for this transport scenario: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.

Future-oriented

Lithium-ion batteries will be indispensable in all industrial applications in the coming years. However, improper use can pose significant hazards during production, storage, and transport. By acquiring these boxes, you secure yourself against larger financial damages from the outset.
