Product information „BUNCKER® transport and storage containers Pro Line Heavy S“
Lithium batteries are used in a wide range of applications and are increasingly popular due to their high energy density and long service life. However, it is important to know that while lithium batteries are generally safe when used properly, they still carry some risks, including the danger of thermal runaway.
Given the potential hazards associated with lithium batteries, safe and certified packaging for transport, storage, and handling is essential. BUNCKER® has developed a patented packaging solution to mitigate the risks and provide protection in the event of thermal runaway or other incidents. The patented fireproof, insulating and filtering material, known as “Altilium,” and the mechanisms for controlled containment and venting of gases aim to contain thermal runaway, which can occur with lithium batteries. Since BUNCKER® can protect both non-critical and critical lithium batteries, these systems offer a versatile solution.
Specifically the transport of critical lithium-ion batteries remains a major challenge. The storage and transport container was developed for the safe transport of critically defective lithium-ion cells. Unlike comparable metal boxes of Packaging Group I, no filler material is required here. This makes this container the ideal solution for intra-company storage and transport in all battery states. The container has been tested and meets the ADR/Packaging Instruction LP 906 requirements. Please contact us with any questions regarding this.
Size and capacity of the battery transport container - Approved for lithium-ion batteries up to 50 kWh.
The transport container has external dimensions of approximately 1200 x 1000 x 1150 mm (L x W x H). Inside the box, the dimensions are 880 x 720 x 750 mm (L x W x H), corresponding to a capacity of about 475 liters. It also has an approval as a Large Packaging in Packaging Group I made of steel (LP). The sturdy base frame is four-way pick-up for forklift trucks. The empty weight of the transport container is about 365 kg. The maximum permissible load is about 435 kg. This corresponds to a permissible gross weight of 800 kg. It is permissible to transport lithium-ion batteries up to 50 kWh in size S. Please contact us about the approval if the container is used for this purpose: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.
Application of the BUNCKER® Pro Line Heavy S Transport and Storage Container
To load the container, first open the side panels and release the clamps. Then the hood can be lifted with a forklift. The batteries can then be placed onto the base plate for loading. The plate features an insulating mat. The batteries themselves can be secured with straps. The hood can then be simply placed back on, the clamps closed, and the side panels closed. Please refer to the instructional video in the “Downloads” tab for details.
The container can also be stacked during storage to maximize space efficiency.
Contents of the UN Certification
UN certification is an important aspect of BUNCKER®, as it shows that the packaging meets the safety standards for the transportation of dangerous goods established by the United Nations. This certification ensures that the product has passed a fire, leakage, and drop test and a worst-case assessment to ensure it effectively contains and prevents the hazards associated with lithium batteries. The tests and assessments demonstrate that BUNCKER® can suppress thermal runaway.
When defective or damaged batteries must be packaged, a UN approval based solely on drop and stack tests is not sufficient. For shipping in accordance with P911/LP906, an additional certification is required to confirm that the packaging complies with the following parameters:
- Withstand a worst-case scenario fire test
- No leaks occur
- The container has a well-functioning gas management system
- High heat resistance is required
These criteria must be met on the basis of the maximum tested kWh of the lithium-ion batteries mentioned.
Always request the transport authorizations for P911/LP906, which confirm the approved type of packaging instruction, such as how to secure the batteries against slipping, how to make the box fireproof, and the consumption limits in kg and kWh for road (ADR), rail (RID) and sea transport (IMDG).
A copy of these certificates should accompany the packaging during transport.
A Safe System thanks to patented insulation material Altilium®
The BUNCKER® Pro Line HEAVY is fully equipped with our patented Fibercon Altilium® CP Blanket (FACB). This innovative product has the potential to filter toxic HF gases. In addition, the FACB has non-flammable, fire-resistant, and insulating properties.

Long service life
BUNCKER® packaging is designed for a long service life. They are developed and manufactured with durable materials to ensure they can withstand the rigors of transport, handling and storage. Through their long service life, BUNCKER® packaging helps reduce how often they need to be replaced and reduces waste.
Low total operating costs
BUNCKER® packaging offers cost advantages over its lifetime. While the initial investment may be higher compared with less durable alternatives, the longevity of BUNCKER® packaging means they need to be replaced less often. BUNCKER® can be operated by one person, and no inner packaging is required. This lowers the total costs associated with acquiring packaging, storage, transport, handling, waste management and cleaning costs.
Robustness

They are designed to protect the contents effectively during transport and storage and to reduce the risk of product damage or spoilage. The robustness of BUNCKER® packaging contributes to its long service life and general cost savings.
Low environmental impact
In a fire event, it is important to prioritize the safety of lives and property. While water is often used as a firefighting agent due to its availability and effectiveness, this is an alternative firefighting method that can minimize environmental impact.
Transport Notes
All legal regulations, as well as any markings and labeling, must be observed during transport. All implementation procedures and transports of the container must be carried out with appropriate and operation-safe means. Before transport, ensure that the hood is securely fastened to the base frame.
Repair and disposal
Damaged transport containers must not be reused. Any repairs must be carried out exclusively by manufacturer-authorized personnel or by the manufacturer itself. Contaminated components must be disposed of in accordance with their contamination.
Certification and guidelines
Lithium batteries fall under Dangerous Goods class 9. When transporting lithium batteries, numerous requirements and guidelines must thus be observed. The transport box has been designed specifically for the strictest safety regulations.
Certified for Packaging Group I
The Pro Line Heavy container meets the requirements of Packaging Group I, meaning that substances with high hazard potential may be transported in it. To achieve this classification, the boxes must withstand drop tests from a height of 1.8 m. All packaging with the code “X” may be used for Packaging Groups I (II and III).
Complies with ADR / LP 906
All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and no longer comply with the applicable regulations according to their manual must meet the provisions of this special rule. This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or vented, sustained external or mechanical damage, or were identified as defective for safety reasons, or could not be diagnosed before transport. If it is determined that lithium-ion cells or batteries under normal transport conditions could tend to rapid disassembly, dangerous reaction, flame formation, dangerous heat generation, or dangerous emission of toxic, corrosive or flammable gases or vapors, these defective cells must be transported in accordance with packaging instruction P 911 or LP 906. These packaging guidelines then require Packaging Group I.
Additionally, there are extra testing requirements: During any possible failure of the lithium-ion battery, the surface of the packaging must never exceed 100°C. Only short-term temperature spikes up to 200°C are permitted. No flames may form outside the packaging, and no splinters may exit the packaging. Furthermore, the structure of the packaging must remain intact at all times and a gas management system must provide internal pressure relief. Compliance with the testing requirements must be demonstrated by real-fire tests
If you want to use the container for the transport case "critically defective" under LP 906, please contact us to obtain the appropriate authorization for this transport case: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.
