Product information „BUNCKER® transport and storage containers Pro Line Heavy XL“
Lithium batteries are used in a wide range of applications and are increasingly popular due to their high energy density and long service life. However, it is important to know that while lithium batteries are generally safe when used properly, they still carry certain risks, including the danger of thermal runaway.
Given the potential hazards posed by lithium batteries, safe and certified packaging is essential for transport, storage, and handling. BUNCKER® has developed a patented packaging solution to mitigate these risks and provide protection in the event of thermal runaway or other incidents. The patented fireproof, insulating, and filtering material, known as “Altilium,” and the mechanisms for controlled confinement and venting of gases aim to contain thermal runaway, which can occur with lithium batteries. Since BUNCKER® can protect both non-critical and critical lithium batteries, these systems offer a versatile solution.
Specifically, the transport of critical lithium-ion batteries remains a major challenge. The storage and transport container was designed for the safe transport of critically defective lithium-ion cells. Unlike comparable metal boxes in Packaging Group I, no filler material is required here. This makes this container the ideal solution for intra-company storage and transport in all battery states. The container has been tested and meets the ADR/LP 906 packaging instruction requirements. Please contact us with any questions on this matter: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.
Size and Capacity of the Battery Transport Container - Approved for Lithium-Ion Batteries up to 100 kWh.
The transport container has external dimensions of approximately 2400 x 1200 x 950 mm (LxWxH). Inside the box, the dimensions are 2120 x 880 x 550 mm (LxWxH), which corresponds to a content of about 1025 liters. It also has an approval as a Large Packaging in Packaging Group I made of steel (LP). The sturdy base frame is two-sided forkliftable. The container’s own weight is about 621 kg. The maximum permissible load is about 800 kg, which corresponds to a permissible gross weight of 1421 kg. It is permissible to transport lithium-ion batteries up to 100 kWh in size XL. Please contact us regarding the approval if the container is used for this purpose: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.
Application of the BUNCKER® Pro Line Heavy XL Transport and Storage Container
To load the container, first the side panels must be opened and the clamps loosened. Then the lid can be lifted with a forklift. The batteries can then be placed onto the base plate for loading. The plate has a non-conductive mat. The batteries themselves can be secured with load straps. After that, the lid can be re-set and the clamps closed and the side panels closed. Please refer to the instruction video in the “Downloads” tab.
The container can also be stacked during storage to use space as efficiently as possible.
Contents of UN Certification
UN certification is an important aspect of BUNCKER®, as it indicates that the packaging meets the safety standards for the transport of dangerous goods set by the United Nations. This certification ensures that the product has passed a fire, leakage, and drop test, as well as an assessment in the worst-case scenario, to ensure that it effectively contains and prevents the hazards associated with lithium batteries. The tests and evaluations show that BUNCKER® can contain thermal runaway.
When defective or damaged batteries must be packaged, UN approval based solely on drop and stacking tests is not sufficient. For shipment in compliance with P911/LP906, an additional certification is required to confirm that the packaging meets the following parameters:
- Withstand a worst-case scenario fire test
- No leakage occurs
- The container has a well-functioning gas management system
- High heat resistance is provided
These criteria must be satisfied based on the maximum tested kWh of the lithium-ion batteries mentioned.
Therefore always request the transport certificates for P911/LP906 certification that confirm the approved packaging instruction, how to secure the batteries against shifting, how to make the box fireproof, and the permissible limits in kg and kWh for road (ADR), rail (RID), and sea transport (IMDG).
A copy of these certificates should be kept with the packaging during transport.
A Safe System Thanks to the Patented Insulation Material Altilium®
The BUNCKER® Pro Line HEAVY is fully equipped with our patented Fibercon Altilium® CP Blanket (FACB). This innovative product has the potential to filter toxic HF gases. In addition, the FACB has non-flammable, fire-resistant, and insulating properties.

Transport Notes
All legal regulations, as well as any markings and labeling, must be observed during transport. All handling operations and transports of the container must be carried out with suitable and safe equipment. Before transport, ensure that the lid is firmly closed with the base frame.
Repair and Disposal
Damaged transport containers must not be reused. Repairs may only be carried out by manufacturer-authorized specialists or by the manufacturer itself. Contaminated components must be disposed of according to their contamination in an appropriate manner.
Certification and Guidelines
Lithium batteries fall into dangerous goods class 9. Therefore, numerous requirements and guidelines must be observed when transporting lithium batteries. The transport box has been specifically designed to meet the strictest safety regulations.
Certified for Packaging Group I
The Pro Line Heavy container meets the requirements of Packaging Group I, meaning that substances with high hazard potential may be shipped in it. To achieve this classification, the boxes must pass drop tests from a height of 1.8 meters. All packaging with the code “X” may be used for Packaging Groups I (II and III).
Meets ADR Guidelines / LP 906 Packaging Instruction
All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and no longer conform to applicable regulations according to their manual must comply with the provisions of this special regulation. This is applicable, for example, to cells that have leaked or degassed, sustained external or mechanical damage, or were identified as defective for safety reasons or could not be diagnosed prior to transport. If it is determined that the lithium-ion cells or batteries could, under normal transport conditions, tend to rapid disassembly, dangerous reaction, flame generation, dangerous heat development, or dangerous emission of toxic, corrosive, or flammable gases or vapors, these defective cells must be transported under Packaging Instruction P 911 or LP 906. These packaging guidelines then prescribe Packaging Group I.
Additionally, there are extra testing requirements: During a potential incident of the lithium-ion battery, the surface of the shipment must never exceed 100°C. Only short-term temperature spikes up to 200°C are permissible. No flames may form outside the shipment, and no splinters may escape from the shipment. Furthermore, the structure of the shipment must be maintained at all times and a gas management system must provide internal pressure relief. Compliance with the test requirements must be demonstrated by real fire tests.
If you wish to use the container for the transport scenario “critically defective” under LP 906, please contact us to obtain the corresponding approval for this transport scenario: info@lion-care.com or +49 7151 256 4811.
Future-Oriented
Lithium-ion batteries will become indispensable in all industrial applications in the coming years. However, if used improperly, there is a not insignificant danger potential during manufacture, storage, and transport. By purchasing these boxes, you secure yourself against larger financial losses from the outset.
