Product information „Genius BSK-1 Charging Case, including cable grommet – red“

Brief overview

The Genius BSK-1 charging case – red – is a compact safety solution for charging, storing and transporting lithium-ion batteries. The integrated cable feed-through allows power to be supplied to the closed case, enabling suitable batteries to be charged whilst inside the container. With an internal volume of 40 litres and a maximum dangerous goods size of 490 × 290 × 230 mm, the BSK-1 is particularly suitable for smaller lithium-ion batteries, such as those found in e-bikes, power tools or similar applications.

The robust case is made of polypropylene (PP) and is fitted with a 4–5 mm thick PTFO inner lining. The protection concept also includes two ventilation elements and a total of four fabric cushions filled with PyroBubbles® Pure M. As the granules are enclosed within the cushions, the PyroBubbles® can be easily inserted and removed, enabling clean, low-dust handling compared to loose granules.

In addition to being used for charging and storage, the BSK-1 is designed as UN-approved packaging for dangerous goods. Depending on the condition of the batteries and the specific transport scenario, the case can be used in accordance with packaging instructions P903, P908, P909 and P910. This includes undamaged batteries, damaged or defective batteries (provided they are not critically defective), batteries intended for recycling, and prototypes.

Safety and protection features

The BSK-1 combines a robust polypropylene outer shell with a 4–5 mm thick PTFO inner lining. Two ventilation elements are integrated into the case.

PyroBubbles® Pure M in fabric cushions is used as the filling material. The pre-assembled cushions make it easier to insert and remove the filling material and reduce dust generation during handling compared to loose granules.

Charging in the case

A special feature of the BSK-1 is the integrated cable grommet with a diameter of 31 mm. This allows the necessary cabling to be routed into the case, enabling it to be used as a charging case for suitable lithium-ion batteries.

When charging, the specifications of the respective battery and charger manufacturers must be observed, as well as the safety measures required for the specific application.

Areas of application

The Genius BSK-1 can be used for various conditions and applications involving lithium-ion batteries. The current manufacturer’s data sheet explicitly states:

  • undamaged and non-defective batteries
  • damaged or faulty batteries
  • batteries for recycling
  • prototypes

Thanks to its compact design and integrated carrying handle, the case can be used flexibly. The fact that it is stackable also makes it easier to store several cases in a space-saving manner.

Transport of dangerous goods

The Genius BSK-1 has the following UN code:

UN 4H2/Y23/S/**/CZ/CIM 3625/GENIUS1

The maximum gross mass is 23 kg. The case is designed in accordance with ADR, RID, IATA-DGR, IMDG and RTDG.

Depending on the battery condition and the specific transport situation, the following packaging instructions apply:

  • P903 / P908 / P909 and P910

Before transporting dangerous goods, the suitability of the packaging must be checked based on the battery condition, dimensions, weight and the applicable transport regulations.

Instructions for use

Before each use, the case – including the inner lining, PyroBubbles® fabric cushions, fastenings and cable grommets – should be checked to ensure it is in good condition.

When used as packaging for dangerous goods, the requirements of the relevant packaging instructions and transport regulations must also be complied with.

Conclusion

The Genius BSK-1 charging case combines the functions of charging, storing and transporting lithium-ion batteries in a single compact system. The integrated cable grommet allows power to be fed into the case, whilst the PTFO inner lining, two ventilation elements and the supplied PyroBubbles® Pure M fabric cushions form part of the protection concept.

If you have any questions regarding the suitability of the BSK-1 for your battery or the intended transport scenario, LionCare will be happy to assist you.

FAQ

That depends on various factors that need to be considered:

  • size of the battery(ies)
  • condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
  • power

Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
