Product information „NEFAB Reusable Transport Crates “

Brief overview

NEFAB reusable transport crates are UN-compliant packaging solutions designed for the transport of lithium-ion batteries and for recurring logistics processes. The range comprises five sizes, from the compact 0806R to the large-format 2418R, and is particularly suitable for end-of-life batteries, spare parts flows, batteries for recycling or second-life applications, as well as – depending on the internal packaging set used – other battery conditions and prototypes. The packaging is compatible with various handling systems and optimised for recurring transport and return processes.

The foldable, reusable design reduces the volume required during empty transport and storage. The containers are designed for a service life of up to 100 cycles and feature a flexible securing system for different battery formats. Depending on the variant and packaging configuration, transport in accordance with P903, P909 and LP903 is possible. With an additional LiB fire protection blanket and liquid-tight inner packaging, the packaging can also be used for defective batteries in accordance with P908 or LP904, and for prototypes in accordance with P910 or LP905.

Scope of delivery

The exact contents depend on the selected container size and the required packaging configuration. The containers generally consist of a collapsible outer packaging with a lid and a base designed for the respective size.

Depending on the condition of the batteries and the specific transport requirements, additional components may be required or may form part of the respective packaging set:

  • NEFAB reusable transport container in the selected size
  • Lid
  • Base or pallet corresponding to the respective version
  • Flexible securing system
  • Markings and labels
  • Strapping bands or straps

Technical data

  • Model: Reusable packaging
  • Design: Foldable
  • Securing: Flexible securing system
  • Transport regulations: ADR, IMDG, RID, UN Recommendations, CFR49 and ICAO/IATA
  • Standard applications: P903, P909, LP903
  • With additional LiB cover and liquid-tight inner packaging: P908, LP904, P910 and LP905

Safety and protection features

NEFAB transport crates are designed as UN-compliant dangerous goods packaging for lithium-ion batteries. The standard range is compatible with ADR, IMDG, RID, CFR49 and ICAO/IATA and accommodates different battery conditions through tailored packaging configurations.

For end-of-life and other batteries suitable for transport, the packaging may be used in accordance with P903, P909 or LP903. For defective batteries, an additional LiB fire protection blanket and liquid-tight inner packaging are required; this enables appropriate configurations in accordance with P908 or LP904. The same additional packaging configuration is specified for the transport of prototypes in accordance with P910 or LP905.

The packaging also has defined static and dynamic stacking loads. The foldable design reduces the volume of the empty packaging during return transport and temporary storage.

Areas of application

NEFAB transport crates are designed for recurring battery and spare parts logistics. The five sizes available can accommodate different battery formats, ranging from smaller modules to large-format EV batteries.

Typical areas of application include:

  • Automotive industry and vehicle manufacturers
  • Battery manufacturers and battery service providers
  • Spare parts and after-sales logistics
  • End-of-life batteries
  • Take-back and reverse logistics
  • Recycling and disposal processes
  • Second-life applications
  • Transport of new and used batteries
  • Transport of batteries with non-critical defects using the appropriate internal packaging kit
  • Transport of prototypes with appropriate packaging configuration

Approvals / Standards

According to the manufacturer, NEFAB transport crates are designed for international transport chains and – depending on the packaging configuration, battery condition and specific transport scenario – meet the requirements of various modes of transport.

  • ADR
  • RID
  • IMDG
  • UN Recommendations
  • CFR49
  • ICAO/IATA
  • P903, P909, LP903, P908 / LP904, P910 / LP905

Instructions for use

Prior to transport, the battery condition, battery dimensions and weight, as well as the applicable packaging instructions, must be determined. The selected battery must be positioned within the specified clearance zone for the relevant variant and secured against movement in accordance with the approved packaging configuration. For defective batteries and prototypes, the additional packaging components specified must be used.

Conclusion

The NEFAB reusable transport crates form a modular packaging system for different lithium-ion battery sizes and recurring logistics processes. Five sizes, defined gross and stacking loads, a foldable design and a flexible securing system enable adaptation to different battery and transport requirements.

FAQ

That depends on various factors that need to be considered:

  • size of the battery(ies)
  • condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
  • power

Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
