Product information „NEFAB single-use transport crates“
Brief overview
NEFAB disposable transport crates are UN-compliant, disposable large-volume packaging made of plywood for the transport of large-format lithium-ion batteries. The two sizes cater for different battery dimensions and weights and are particularly suitable for transport processes where there is no provision for the return of reusable packaging.
In their standard configuration, the transport crates can be used for lithium-ion batteries in accordance with LP903. An additional packaging assembly is required for damaged or defective batteries in accordance with LP904, as well as for prototypes in accordance with LP905. NEFAB specifies a LiB fire protection blanket and a liquid-tight inner packaging for this purpose.
The plywood construction combines a comparatively low tare weight with a high permissible gross mass. Both variants are accessible from all four sides, thus enabling handling with suitable industrial trucks.

Scope of delivery
The standard version of the NEFAB disposable transport crates consists of a plywood container with a base frame and lid. The structurally integrated fixing points allow the battery and the container to be secured using suitable lashing straps.
Please note: The lashing straps required for securing the load are not included in the scope of delivery and can be ordered separately. For transport in accordance with LP904 or LP905, additional internal packaging and protective components are required.
Optional accessories
Depending on the condition of the battery and transport requirements, the basic packaging can be supplemented with, amongst other things:
- Suitable lashing straps for securing the battery and lid
- LiB fire-retardant blanket
- Liquid-tight inner packaging / PE film
- Markings and dangerous goods labels
- Customised inner packaging set for damaged or defective batteries that are not critically defective

Safety and protection features
The NEFAB single-use transport crates are designed as large packaging units for lithium-ion batteries. Fixing points within the container allow the battery to be secured using suitable lashing straps
The basic configuration is not sufficient for damaged or defective batteries. When transporting in accordance with LP904, the packaging must be supplemented with the necessary protective components. Corresponding additional components are also provided for the transport of prototypes in accordance with LP905.
The permissible static and dynamic stacking loads allow for stacking tailored to the respective variant during storage and transport.
Areas of application
NEFAB single-use packaging is particularly suitable for the one-off dispatch of large-format lithium-ion batteries where return of the packaging is not planned or is not economically viable. Typical applications include:
- New and used lithium-ion batteries
- Spare parts and after-sales logistics
- End-of-life batteries
- Batteries for disposal or recycling
- Second-life applications
- Defective batteries (non-critically defective) with appropriate internal packaging kit
- Prototypes with appropriate packaging configuration
- Automotive and battery services
Approvals / Standards
NEFAB single-use transport crates are designed as UN-approved large packaging units for dangerous goods. The NEFAB standard range for lithium batteries is designed for international transport chains and is compatible with ADR, IMDG, RID, UN Recommendations, CFR 49 and ICAO/IATA.
- ADR packaging instructions: LP903, LP904, LP905 – depending on battery condition and packaging configuration
- International transport regulations: ADR, IMDG, RID, UN Recommendations, CFR 49 and ICAO/IATA
Specific suitability must be checked before every transport of dangerous goods, taking into account the condition of the batteries, their dimensions, weight and the applicable dangerous goods regulations.
Instructions for use
Before use, the transport box and all components must be checked for damage and to ensure they are in good condition. The battery must be secured within the container using suitable lashing equipment to prevent slipping and other transport-related movements. Before transport, it must also be ensured that the lid is correctly connected to and secured to the base frame.
Both variants are accessible from all four sides and can be handled using suitable industrial trucks. The respective permissible gross mass and the static and dynamic stacking loads must be observed during handling, storage and transport.
This is single-use packaging.
Conclusion
NEFAB single-use transport crates offer a single-use solution for the transport of large-format lithium-ion batteries as dangerous goods.
Depending on the packaging configuration, the containers can be used for transport cases in accordance with LP903, LP904 and LP905. Additional inner packaging and protective components are required for damaged or defective batteries as well as prototypes.
If you have any questions regarding the appropriate container size, the required inner packaging set or the specific transport configuration, LionCare will be happy to assist you in selecting the suitable packaging solution.

FAQ
That depends on various factors that need to be considered:
- size of the battery(ies)
- condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
- power
Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.
Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.
Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.
We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.
The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.
The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.
Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.
Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.
The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.
To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.
It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.
For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
