Product information „VLITEX fire blanket / SUPERIOR fire blanket“

1. Brief overview

The VLITEX SUPERIOR fire blanket (hereinafter also referred to synonymously as fire blanket or fire protection blanket) is designed to cover damaged or burning (electric) vehicles and devices with lithium-ion batteries. It is used to isolate flames under the blanket in the best possible way, reduce the spread of smoke and toxic gases, lower the temperature and limit explosions under the blanket.

Fires involving lithium-ion batteries pose a particular challenge, as conventional fire extinguishers often reach their limits here. The SUPERIOR fire containment blanket offers a simple, quickly deployable option for containing a fire source and thus protecting the surrounding area.

Please note: The term "fire blanket" is often used in common parlance. In technical terms, this is a fire containment or fire protection blanket - the fire is primarily contained, not actively extinguished.

2. Areas of application & conditions of use

  • Fire containment and enclosure of fires or sources of fire with lithium-ion batteries

  • Suitable for e.g:

    • (E-)vehicles such as e-bikes, e-scooters, cars and forklift trucks

  • Use as a heat shield and for controlled containment of battery fires:

    • Containment of flames

    • Reduction of smoke and gas emissions

    • Limits the temperature in the surrounding area

  • Suitable for preventive use, e.g. for covering functional but endangered batteries during storage to prevent the spread of fire.

Note on the standard situation ("fire blanket"):
The European standard DIN EN 1869:2019-10 refers to fire blankets for grease and cooking oil fires (deep-frying fats up to 3 l). The SUPERIOR fire blanket offered here is not certified according to this standard and is not intended for cooking oil and cooking fat fires. The intended use is the containment or limitation of Li-ion battery fires.

3.3 Overview of variants (size & weight)

The SUPERIOR fire protection blanket is available in several sizes to provide suitable coverage for everything from small appliances to cars:

  sUPERIOR 5 x 6 sUPERIOR 6 x 8 sUPERIOR 8 x 10
Dimensions 5 x 6 m 6 x 8 m 8 x 10 m
Weight approx. 18 kg approx. 28.8 kg approx. 48 kg

Note: Size and weight specifications with approx. ±5 % tolerance.

4. Approvals & safety features

  • Complies with DIN SPEC 91489 (fire protection blankets for lithium-ion batteries)
  • Non-combustible in accordance with DIN EN 13501 (A2)
  • Proven cut protection in accordance with ISO 13997
  • High electrical resistance (DIN 54345-1)

The ceiling has also been tested in tests (including in a vehicle safety laboratory) for temperature shielding, smoke minimization and effectiveness as a heat shield.

5. Notes on use & operation

Basic principle of use:

  • The blanket is picked up by the handles and carefully pulled over the burning or endangered object
  • Depending on the fire load, the fire is usually smothered or significantly contained within a short time
  • In order to support sufficient cooling (below approx. 100 °C), the blanket should remain on the object for as long as possible

Important notes:

  • After removing the blanket, check that there is no re-ignition - even individual battery cells can react again with a time delay
  • If possible, always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • The fire department should always be called in the event of a fire
  • By using the blanket, ambient temperatures can be reduced, smoke and gases limited and the fire department's scope for action increased.

Simple use:

  • The fire blanket can be used once.

Storage:

  • Store blankets in red bag, metal box or trolley
  • Store in a dry place; do not place any loads directly on the blanket

6. Conclusion

The SUPERIOR fire blanket is designed to contain and limit fires in connection with lithium-ion batteries. Thanks to its heat-resistant silicon quartz with vermiculite coating, the tested temperature resistance and the electrical insulation effect, it supports controlled burning behavior and the reduction of smoke and gas release.

FAQ

That depends on various factors that need to be considered:

  • size of the battery(ies)
  • condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
  • power

Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

If you want to learn more about battery storage and transportation, you will find the answers in our blog articles:

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
