Product information „CEMO Li-SAFE 2-L storage and transport box “

The CEMO Li-SAFE 2-L plastic battery system fire protection box presented here is the ideal solution for users looking for a reliable way to transport or store lithium batteries/lithium-ion batteries with substance numbers UN3480, UN3481, UN3090 and UN3091. In addition to storing lithium batteries as a stationary safety container, the fire protection box is also suitable for fire-protected storage on the move (e.g. on construction sites) and for compliant public transport by road. The battery containers in the Li-SAFE series, made of durable, impact-resistant plastic, are ideal for applications such as power tools and small devices that use lithium-ion batteries.

Size and capacity of the battery transport container

The battery container is extremely handy and flexible in use. With external dimensions of 500 x 300 x 280 mm and internal dimensions of 400 x 170 x 150 mm (length x width x height), the Li-SAFE 2-L battery system fire protection box is particularly compact and therefore ideal for use in confined spaces and with a small number of lithium-ion batteries. The CEMO Li-SAFE 2-L battery system fire protection box has a permissible total weight of 12 kg. The Li-SAFE 2-L plastic battery system fire protection box is the largest model in the Li-SAFE series. In addition, the boxes can be stacked and connected to each other, thus taking up minimal storage space. The container has a closure with two clips.

Delivery includes vermiculite cushions

This version of the box comes with four mouldable special cushions. These prevent unwanted movement of the batteries inside the box. Vermiculite cushions for hazardous goods are non-flammable and temperature-resistant up to over 1000 °C. They also offer excellent cushioning and insulation properties and are completely harmless to health.

Packaging group, special regulations and packaging instructions

Lithium batteries fall into dangerous goods class 9, which means that the goods pose a risk to the environment during transport that should not be underestimated. Numerous regulations and guidelines must therefore be observed when transporting lithium batteries. CEMO battery system fire protection boxes have been specially designed to meet the most stringent safety regulations.

Battery container is certified for packaging groups II and III

The containers in the Li-SAFE series meet the requirements of packaging groups II and III, which means that substances with low and medium hazard potential may be transported in them. To achieve this classification, the box must be type-tested and have survived a drop height of 1.2 metres.

Suitable for transport in accordance with SV 376 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 908

All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and no longer comply with the applicable regulations in accordance with their manual must comply with the provisions of Special Provision 376 (SV 376). This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or degassed, suffered external or mechanical damage, or have been identified as defective for safety reasons, or could not be diagnosed prior to transport. These cells must then be packed in accordance with packing instruction P 908. According to this guideline, it must be ensured, for example, that any electrolyte that is released is absorbed and that a non-electrically conductive thermal insulation material protects the environment from dangerous heat build-up.

For storage, transport and recycling in accordance with SV 377 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 909

Special provision SV 377 regulates the transport of lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that are being transported for disposal or recycling. Similar to packaging instruction P 908, P 909 requires compliance with guidelines for packaging group II. In addition, restrictions apply to the nominal energy and weight of lithium-ion cells and batteries.

Prototype transport according to SV 310 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 910

Special provision SV 310 regulates the transport of prototypes of lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries. Packaging instruction P 910 then sets out requirements for packaging and dangerous goods mass, among other things.

Special provision SV 230 applies to cells and batteries containing lithium in any form, including lithium polymer and lithium ion cells and batteries. Packaging instruction P 903 applies to UN numbers 3090, 3091, 3480 and 3481 and is intended for devices that are powered by lithium cells or batteries. This ensures the safe transport of intact batteries.

The 2-L version comes with 2 of these special cushions.

Differences between the Li-SAFE 2-L and Li-SAFE 3-S battery system fire protection boxes

The Li-SAFE 2-L battery system fire protection box presented here is part of the Li-SAFE line, which offers an attractive entry point into the safe storage and reliable transport of lithium batteries. CEMO also offers the boxes in the Li-SAFE 3-S version. This has the same basic dimensions and differs only in height and permissible total weight. In addition, the 3-S version includes 3 special cushions. Both versions are ideal for different battery conditions according to ADR (new/intact, prototype, defective, disposal) and have an ADR sticker. The boxes can be easily stacked for storage and transport and can also be connected to each other with a twist lock. Both fire protection boxes can be transported horizontally or vertically using the two carrying handles.

Tested in accordance

with the

TÜV Nord / DMT programme up to 227 Wh

The transport and storage container has been tested in accordance with TÜV Nord DMT principle M02/22 Storage media for lithium-ion batteries. The maximum permissible energy density for this system is 227 Wh. No escape of flames or splinters. The type certificate can be downloaded via the "Downloads" tab.

FAQ

That depends on various factors that need to be considered:

  • size of the battery(ies)
  • condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
  • power

Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Find out more in our blog article:

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
