In buildings and storage facilities where lithium-ion batteries are kept, faulty cells can pose a significant risk to staff and to operational and storage equipment. Explosive fires involving batteries (‘thermal runaway’) are extremely difficult to control. The BSK-2 fire protection case is ideally suited for the safe storage of lithium-ion rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries. Thanks to the special and unique cable feed-through, batteries can be safely charged whilst stored in the case. Its light weight, ease of handling and robust construction ensure safe use even in enclosed spaces.

Features of the BSK-2 fire-resistant case

With the BSK-2 fire protection case, you’re on the safe side. The case has been developed using the latest technology and successfully tested in real-world fire trials. The PyroBubbles® cushions it contains can withstand significantly higher heat loads than, for example, rock wool or glass fibre products.

The completely maintenance-free GENIUS PyroBubbles are suitable as an extinguishing agent/fire protection medium for rechargeable batteries, which is a major advantage in the event of a thermal runaway.

The BSK-2 fire protection case is made of polypropylene (PP) and is supplied with dust-free PyroBubble® cushions. The following cushion sizes are included: 2x PP-S, 2x PP-M, 2x PP-XL. The external dimensions of the red GENIUS fire safety case are 80 x 60 x 44.5 cm (L x W x H), with an empty weight of 21 kg. The internal dimensions are 70 x 45 x 38 cm (L x W x H), giving the specialised case a volume of 133 litres. The maximum recommended dimensions for dangerous goods are 650 x 450 x 330 mm. Thanks to its handle and very low weight – despite the extremely robust outer shell – the fire safety case is easy to handle.

The case can be used for internal transport.

Please note that the total maximum energy density of all batteries to be stored in the box should not exceed 3,000 Wh.

Advantages of the charging case 

The BSK-2 fire-resistant case has been developed to the highest safety standards for the storage of lithium-ion batteries. Thanks to the additional and unique cable feed-through, batteries can not only be stored in the BSK-2 but also charged safely.

The extremely robust outer shell, in its striking colour, features integrated pressure relief valves and an ergonomic handle. The fire-resistant case is very easy to handle and contains no hazardous substances (it is not harmful to health). This specialised case can also be used in enclosed spaces and features special explosion protection within the housing, making it suitable even for high-powered tools or faulty batteries. 

The BSK-2 fire-resistant case offers maximum protection for people and their surroundings. In the event of an accident, it ensures that no flames or shrapnel escape. Thanks to its high puncture resistance, the case is also suitable for powerful power tools or faulty batteries.

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.
