The here-presented Lio Guard XS-Box 1 Basic transport container made of plastic is the ideal solution for users who are looking for a reliable way to transport or store lithium batteries / lithium-ion cells with material numbers UN3090, UN3091, UN3480, UN3481 in compliance with regulations and according to the latest standards. In addition to storing intact lithium batteries, the Lio Guard XS-Box 1 transport container is particularly suitable for damaged cells, which pose a significant hazard during transport as well as during processing. The containers of the Lio Guard series made of plastic are excellent for applications such as e-bike batteries, power tool batteries and laptops, where lithium-ion batteries are used.
Size and capacity of the battery transport container
The Lio Guard XS-Box 1 Basic transport container has a volume of 17 liters and can contain a dangerous goods amount of 11.1 kg with dimensions of 318 x 218 x 137 mm. The empty weight is 1.9 kg, with a maximum gross weight of 13 kg. From the XS line of plastic Lio Guard transport containers, this is the smaller of two variants.
The battery container is extremely handy and versatile. The Lio Guard XS-Box 1 Basic transport and storage container measures 400 x 300 x 235 mm externally and 358 x 258 x 177 mm internally (length x width x height), making it particularly compact and ideal for use in confined environments and with few lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the boxes are stackable up to a height of three meters and thus require minimal storage space. The container is made of robust polypropylene and can be used in a temperature range from -20°C to 80°C. Storage should be between 15°C and 30°C. Based on practical experience with commercially available and everyday lithium-ion batteries, the total capacity of all batteries stored in the GENIUS XS-Box 1 Basic should not exceed 0.65 kWh in total.
A coordinated system using PyroBubbles®
Individual and expensive transport solutions can be replaced by this economical and standardized product. The boxes are permanently reusable and are offered in the Basic, Advanced and Premium variants. The box is filled with the fire-extinguishing agent PyroBubbles®, which forms a closed and thermally insulating layer around a fire source.
In this version of the box, 18 small PE filling cushions at 0.22 kg (0.70 liters) are included. The cushions are surrounded by a thin, needle-punched polyethylene (PE) film that dissolves in the event of a fire, releasing the extinguishing agent. Tensioning straps with quick-release buckles ensure that the lid stays closed. Even in the event of a chain reaction (thermal runaway), the surroundings remain reliably protected.

Certification and guidelines
Lithium batteries fall under dangerous goods class 9, which means that the goods pose a non-negligible risk to the environment during transport. Therefore, numerous requirements and guidelines must be followed when transporting lithium batteries. The transport boxes of the Lio Guard series are specifically designed to meet the corresponding safety regulations.
Certified for Packaging Group II
The containers of the Lio Guard series meet the requirements of Packaging Group II, meaning substances with moderate hazard potential may be transported in them. To achieve this classification, the box must be type-tested and withstand a drop height of 1.2 m.
Suitable for transport under SV 376 of the ADR and Packaging Instruction P 908
All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and do not comply with applicable regulations according to their manual must comply with the provisions of Special Provision 376 (SV 376). This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or vented, suffered external or mechanical damage, or have been identified as defective for safety reasons or could not be diagnosed prior to transport. These cells must then be packed according to Packaging Instruction P 908. According to this guideline, it must be ensured that any released electrolyte is absorbed and that a non-conductive thermal insulating material protects the surroundings from dangerous heat development.
For storage, transport, and recycling under SV 377 of the ADR and Packaging Instruction P 909
Special Provision SV 377 governs the transport of lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries intended for disposal or recycling. Similar to Packaging Instruction P 908, guidelines for Packaging Group II must be followed in P 909. In addition, restrictions on nominal energy and weight of the lithium-ion cells and batteries apply.
Prototyping transports under SV 310 of the ADR and Packaging Instruction P 910
Special Provision SV 310 regulates the transport of prototypes of lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium metal cells or batteries. Packaging Instruction P 910 then imposes requirements on the packaging and the dangerous goods mass.
VdS 3103: 2019-06 (03) – Lithium Batteries
There are currently no legal requirements for the storage and provisioning of lithium batteries in public spaces. The following publication provides recommendations to avoid damage when providing lithium batteries in production and storage areas. The key findings from fire tests on storage and provisioning are described therein.
