PyroBubbles® from Genius are a new type of extinguishing agent based on silicon dioxide that has been specially developed to meet the challenges posed by burning lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries, as conventional extinguishing agents such as water, foam, powder or CO2 quickly reach their limits in battery fires. Specially developed extinguishing granules are therefore used in these hazardous situations, which can not only be used to extinguish acute battery fires, but can also be used as a preventative measure when transporting lithium-ion batteries. PyroBubbles® for firefighting and transporting batteries
Genius hollow glass extinguishing granules are used in a variety of situations. On the one hand, PyroBubbles® are used when conventional extinguishing agents such as water are no longer effective or can cause major damage. The characteristics of rechargeable battery and battery fires therefore require the use of alternative extinguishing agents, where PyroBubbles® are used.
PyroBubbles® as a filler in battery transport containers / storage and transport boxes
In addition to acute firefighting, Genius PyroBubbles® are also used as a filler in storage and transport containers for lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries. With PyroBubbles® as a filler, both intact and defective batteries are protected from impact and mechanical damage during transportation. Depending on the type and quantity of lithium-ion batteries to be transported, a distinction is made between different battery transport / shipping classes, on the basis of which the safety measures must also be adapted.v
Direct firefighting if problems arise during transportation
The function of the PyroBubbles® is much more important than the mechanical protection if there are problems with the batteries during transportation, for example if they ignite or even explode. The PyroBubbles® then act as an extinguishing agent and the battery fire is extinguished directly inside the transport container so that it does not endanger the surrounding area. Special advantage: The PyroBubbles work as a passive extinguishing agent, i.e. firefighting does not have to be actively initiated, but is started automatically when the Li-ion battery ignites.
In combination with Genius battery containers for storage and transportation
PyroBubbles® are used as standard in Lio Guard transport containers, for example, but can of course also be used in battery transport containers from other series or manufacturers. Many regulations for the transportation of lithium batteries stipulate the use of appropriate extinguishing agents such as PyroBubbles® or the transport and storage containers only comply with the ADR regulations in combination with the use of PyroBubbles®.
Battery fire extinguisher with PyroBubbles® as active extinguishing agent
PyroBubbles® are not only used as a passive extinguishing agent in storage containers for Li-ion batteries, this extinguishing granulate from Genius is also used in battery fire extinguishers for active firefighting. The BAVARIA Tornado 50 VERRE-5 fire extinguisher is one of these fire extinguishers, which is filled with a volume of 50 liters (around 12.5 kg) of PyroBubbles® and can therefore be used if electrical systems or Li-ion batteries catch fire and require rapid assistance.

Features and advantages of Pyrobubbles® for the storage of Li-ion batteries
The numerous advantages and positive properties of Genius PyroBubbles® make it suitable for a wide range of applications. These are summarized once again below:
- PyroBubbles® are resistant up to a temperature of approx. 1050 °C. Above this melting point, they liquefy and then form a closed and at the same time thermally insulating layer around the source of the fire, in the case of a battery fire around the respective battery.
- PyroBubbles® are extremely low-maintenance and therefore generate only low maintenance costs.
- PyroBubbles® can be removed after each use and are largely reusable, i.e. as long as there is no battery fire, they can in principle be used again and again.
- PyroBubbles® are porous hollow glass granules and are therefore not harmful to the environment.
- PyroBubbles® are the ideal filling material for the storage and transportation of lithium-ion batteries (in accordance with UN3480, UN3090) and are therefore used in many battery storage containers.
- PyroBubbles® are considerably lighter than sand (approx. 235 kg/m³), which means that transportation requires considerably less energy and therefore saves CO2.
- PyroBubbles® are water-repellent and therefore do not lose their effectiveness as an extinguishing agent for accumulators and batteries even when stored for long periods of time
Extinguishing effect of Genius PyroBubbles® for battery fires
This extinguishing agent developed by Genius especially for battery fires has been created precisely for the special properties of battery fires. Based on silicon dioxide, it can not only be used to fight and contain fires at an early stage, but also to prevent other sources of danger emanating from a burning lithium battery (such as the increased development of flammable reaction gases).
Melting of the extinguishing granulate causes thermal insulation
PyroBubbles® are temperature-resistant up to a temperature of approx. 700 °C. If a lithium-ion battery catches fire, high temperatures develop and the granulate melts, forming a closed and thermally insulating layer around the source of the fire, in this case the lithium battery. Oxygen is removed from the source of the fire.
High heat capacity creates a cooling effect
In addition to melting, which takes the initial energy out of the system and thus reduces the temperature, the high specific heat capacity of PyroBubbles® ensures that further heat energy is absorbed. This results in a reduction in the temperature of the entire system and a cooling effect sets in. This cooling of the Li-ion batteries can, for example, prevent a thermal runway, in which all battery cells ignite within a very short time.
Low conductivity protects the environment
In addition to the actual extinguishing effect, the Genius PyroBubbles® have an important protective function for the environment. They shield flammable material and the other surroundings outside the acute source of the fire thanks to their low thermal conductivity. This prevents, for example, other Li-ion batteries in the same battery transport container from also igniting.
Porous structure of the battery extinguishing granulate absorbs reaction gases
In the event of a battery fire, flammable and toxic reaction gases can be produced, which not only pose a risk of the source of the fire spreading, but can also be dangerous / harmful to the environment. The porous structure of the PyroBubbles® extinguishing granulate absorbs these reaction gases produced by the battery fire and thus significantly reduces this source of danger.
Electrically insulating - ideal for battery systems
Another property of PyroBubbles® makes this granulate the perfect extinguishing agent for burning lithium-ion batteries: it is electrically insulating! Especially when lithium batteries do not catch fire during separate transportation etc., but in the original system (such as in electric cars etc.), these systems often contain high electrical voltages. Conventional extinguishing agents such as water can trigger electric shocks etc. during extinguishing, and short circuits and current discharges are almost inevitable. The silicon extinguishing granulate from Genius ensures effective insulation of the source of the fire due to its lack of electrical conductivity and can therefore prevent electrical discharges. Accordingly, it is also used to extinguish electric cars or, for example, as an extinguishing agent for burning e-bike batteries, often in combination with special extinguishing blankets / fire blankets for electric cars.
PyroBubbles® in the test
Of course, Genius PyroBubbles® have already been tested many times and have proven their effectiveness in fighting battery fires. Especially in combination with the LioGuard packaging systems, extensive fire tests have been carried out by the manufacturer Genius in cooperation with the Luckenwalde Fire Service Technical Center in order to obtain proof of function and approval, for example. Continuous tests with the BAM and, of course, countless practical applications have proven PyroBubbles® to be extremely effective in preventing and fighting Li-ion battery fires.

As part of the approval as an extinguishing agent for fire classes A, B, D and F, PyroBubbles® were subjected to a series of tests by the MPA in Dresden. Only after passing the tests was it approved as a certified extinguishing agent for fire classes A, B, D and F.
Environmentally friendly, non-toxic and no damage to extinguishing water
In addition to the advantages for extinguishing Li-ion batteries, Genius PyroBubbles® are also characterized by positive properties with regard to the environment and toxicity. Thanks to their production from hollow glass, PyroBubbles® are environmentally friendly and, unlike other extinguishing agents, do not pollute the environment or water. In addition, PyroBubbles® pose no danger to humans or animals, as the material is not toxic or otherwise dangerous, neither during storage nor when used to extinguish battery fires.
No collateral damage from extinguishing water
When extinguishing fires, the damage caused by the use of extinguishing water or other extinguishing agents is often greater than the damage caused by the actual fire. PyroBubbles® also offer the different properties that minimize the damage caused by extinguishing with PyroBubbles®. The focus here is really on extinguishing the battery fire; unintended consequences are largely avoided.

Genius PyroBubbles® are an ideal extinguishing agent for lithium-ion batteries and are suitable for flammable substances of fire class D. The average particle size is 2 to 6 mm. The extinguishing agent is water-repellent and age-resistant, so that it still has its protective and extinguishing effect even after a long storage period.
Reusable
Depending on the application, some of the PyroBubbles can be picked up again after use and reused, so you don't have to buy new ones every time they are used. In addition, the extinguishing agent is able to absorb electrolytes and is characterized by low thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.
Supplied in filling bags or as bagged goods
PyroBubbles® extinguishing granules can be purchased either as filling pads, bagged goods or directly in BigBags. The filling cushions can be used directly in the battery transport containers, for example. The extinguishing granulate in BigBags is particularly suitable for large consumers.

Many storage boxes for Li-ion batteries, such as the Lio-Guard boxes from Genius, often include PyroBubbles® in pillows as standard. These battery transport containers are therefore perfectly prepared for storing or transporting batteries as soon as they are delivered.
The differences between PyroBubbles® Pure M or Premium
PyroBubbles® extinguishing granules are available in two quality levels - Pure M and Premium. PyroBubbles® Pure M use recycled glass and are cheaper
The Pure M version of the extinguishing granulate is slightly cheaper than the Premium version. The reason for this is the addition of recycled glass, which is not used in the Premium extinguishing granulate. In addition to the price, the ecological aspect also plays an important role here, as the use of recycled glass means that fewer new raw materials are used, thus protecting the environment when you buy PyroBubbles® Pure M. PyroBubbles® Premium
In contrast to the Pure M extinguishing granules, no recycled materials are used for the PyroBubbles® Premium, which results in a slightly higher price. At the same time, with the Premium PyroBubbles® you can be sure that there are no possible impurities due to the use of recycled glass in the extinguishing granulate and therefore always have optimum protection and extinguishing effect against battery fires.
