Lithium-ion batteries are both a blessing and a curse. High energy density in the smallest storage cell represents a quantum leap and harbors risks despite state-of-the-art technology. Fires involving these batteries are difficult to control due to thermal runaway. The actual firefighting of smaller lithium-ion batteries (up to 600 Wh) by trained personnel requires a fire extinguishing device with a particularly high cooling effect, preferably with a pre-mounted extinguishing lance to maintain a safe distance.

Trade associations such as the DGUV and the bvfa recommend water as the extinguishing agent, with extinguishing agent additives if necessary.

GLORIA developed the GLORIA WKL6 PRO high-performance fire extinguisher precisely on this basis in order to contain fires with lithium-ion batteries with cylindrical (18650) cells up to 642 Wh.

Compact battery fire extinguisher for businesses and private individuals

The WKL6 PRO from GLORIA has a capacity of 6 liters of extinguishing agent to fight burning batteries. This enables a spraying time of approx. 65 seconds at a spraying range of 4 m. The GLORIA WKL 6PRO fire extinguisher has external dimensions of 640x400x165 mm (HxWxD) and weighs 10.8 kg.

For firefighting lithium batteries and rechargeable batteries

The compact dimensions and light weight of the WKL6 PRO make it very flexible and versatile. Whether for extinguishing a burning e-bike battery, a fire from a laptop battery, e-scooter, cordless screwdriver or other battery fires - the extinguisher presented here is quickly to hand and can prevent major damage.

Can also be used to extinguish electrical systems

In addition to extinguishing all types of battery fires, the GLORIA WKL6 PRO fire extinguisher can also be used in other areas. For example, fires in electrical systems up to 1000 volts can also be extinguished, whereby a distance of at least one meter must be maintained when fighting the fire. For higher voltages, DIN VDE 0132 must be observed.

Features and equipment of the WKL6 PRO fire extinguisher

The WKL6 PRO fire extinguisher has been specially developed for fighting battery fires and burning lithium batteries. Both the GLORIA IMPREX C additive used and the other properties of the GLORIA fire extinguisher are therefore perfectly designed for these hazardous situations that can arise from rechargeable batteries and batteries.

Wide temperature range for fighting fires involving batteries and accumulators

The GLORIA WKL6 PRO fire extinguisher can be used in a wide temperature range. It can be used to fight battery fires from +5°C to +60°C.

Handling the water fire extinguisher

To make using the GLORIA fire extinguisher as easy as possible for both commercial and private users, the manufacturer has implemented various concepts and features that enable efficient firefighting of battery and accumulator fires in everyday use. The cylinder has a tried-and-tested impact button fitting with an ergonomically shaped, extremely sturdy carrying handle. The valve body is made of high-strength, glass fiber-reinforced special plastic with a pre-assembled disposable cartridge (not a floating cartridge!), separate from the water.

Laser-welded, durable container with easy handling, incl. wall bracket

The portable water fire extinguisher is supplied with a sturdy wall bracket as standard. This means it is always ready to hand and can be positioned flexibly. The container is laser-welded and has a durable internal coating. The metal union nut is black anodized. The internal CO2 propellant bottle has a corrosion-resistant polyethylene coating (technical data marked with durable laser printing). Perfect handling thanks to rotatable and extra-long LABS-free quality hose line with fabric insert made of synthetic rubber material. The extinguishing gun can be rotated and stopped with a pre-assembled extinguishing lance with 5-hole spray nozzle.

Extinguishing effect of the GLORIA WKL6 PRO - the water extinguisher for containing battery fires

The GLORIA WKL 6PRO extinguisher can be used for class A fires and in particular for burning lithium-ion batteries. The blue color code on the bottle indicates that the extinguishing agent is water. 0.12 l of the GLORIA IMPREX C extinguishing agent concentrate is added to the 5.88 l of extinguishing water. The extinguishing capacity according to DIN EN 3 is specified as 21A (=6 LE). The Dutch institute KIWA tested the suitability for lithium-ion batteries.

Environmentally friendly additive GLORIA IMPREX C

No extinguishing substances were deliberately added to the extinguishing water. Apart from the fluorine-free GLORIA IMPREX C additive, there are no other additives. The extinguishing agent is therefore free of environmentally harmful PFOS or PFOA!

In addition to use with lithium-ion batteries, also suitable for other areas

In addition to lithium-ion batteries, the water extinguisher is also suitable for the most common fires at home thanks to its fire class A rating. The extinguisher is also highly recommended in the commercial sector, for example in storage areas of computer/electrical stores, tool departments in trading companies or in file storage/archives/paper and packaging storage.

GLORIA, your contact for all questions relating to fire protection products for decades.

The manufacturer GLORIA has been one of the leading suppliers of fire extinguishers in Germany for more than 70 years. From portable and mobile fire extinguishers to large fire extinguishers. GLORIA offers the right solution for every need.

Efficient firefighting of battery fires - increasingly important in the future

Lithium-ion batteries will be indispensable in all industrial and increasingly also in private applications in the coming years. However, if used improperly, batteries can pose a potential hazardduring production, storage and transportation that should not be underestimated . By purchasing a suitable fire extinguisher, you can protect yourself from the outset against major financial damage that can be caused by battery fires, for example.

FAQ
Fragen & Antworten zum Artikel ... mehr
What fire class are lithium-ion batteries assigned to?
Lithium-ion batteries are currently not assigned to any specific fire class. The batteries consist of various solid and liquid components, which makes concrete classification difficult. Focusing solely on fire class D, for example, is not effective.
What test procedures are used for fire extinguishers for lithium-ion batteries?
There are currently no specific standardized test procedures that prove suitability beyond doubt. All systems sold by us have been tested for suitability by the manufacturers' internal testing departments and/or partially verified by external laboratories. If there are clear statements regarding suitability (e.g., max. energy density), these are communicated in the product description. Please contact us if you have any doubts or questions.
How do the different extinguishing agents in fire extinguishers differ?
In most cases, these are water-based products with various additives. Bavaria's Water Glue is a gel that adheres excellently to surfaces and also ensures that the areas treated with the gel cannot ignite. The systems from Gloria and Neuruppin are water with an extinguishing agent additive (Imprex-C or F500-EA) that changes the properties of the water. These additives change the surface tension of the water, improve the penetration depth, and ensure a better cooling effect of the water. LithiumX from Bavaria is an aqueous dispersion in which natural silicon crystals are kept in suspension in an aqueous solution. When sprayed onto the burning material, the water evaporates and the microscopic silicon flakes swell and merge to form an impermeable barrier layer. This isolates the fire and immediately reduces the thermal radiation above the barrier layer to below 100°C. An alternative name for these systems on the market is “AVD.” PyroBubbles: PyroBubbles are small glass beads. In the event of a fire, the granules melt and form a closed, thermally insulating layer around the source of the fire, thereby depriving it of oxygen. Combustible reaction gases are reduced thanks to the pores in the spheres. The high specific heat capacity absorbs thermal energy and the temperature is reduced thanks to the cooling effect. Furthermore, combustible material is shielded by the low thermal conductivity. Please note: Active firefighting with PyroBubbles requires a specific fire protection concept.
