Transport containers and shipping boxes for lithium batteries and Li-ion batteries
The transportation of lithium-ion batteries poses a particular challenge. Due to the high energy density of lithium batteries, defective battery cells in particular pose a potential danger that can lead to fire and even explosion of the batteries. Accordingly, lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries are classified as hazardous goods that require very special handling during transportation.
Requirements for the transportation and shipping of lithium-ion batteries
Due to the potential dangers of lithium batteries, there are a number of regulations and specifications for the transportation of lithium-ion batteries that must be observed during national and international transport.
Special regulations from the ADR - SV 310, SV 376 and SV 377
The most important regulations are the ADR, which on the one hand contain special regulations for transportation (SV 310, SV 377 and SV 376). The transport containers for lithium batteries and Li-ion batteries presented here fulfill the special regulations of the ADR. You can find out which container fulfills which special regulation in the respective article details.
Packaging instructions from the ADR - LP 906, P 908 to 911
The ADR also contain packaging instructions, i.e. clear specifications on how the lithium-ion batteries must be packaged so as not to present a source of danger during transportation/shipping. The packaging instructions from the ADR relevant to this area are LP 906, P 908, P 909, P 910 and P 911. The containers for battery transport presented here comply with the packaging instructions from the ADR. You can find out which container fulfills which packaging instruction in the respective article details.
Certification of transport containers and shipping boxes according to packaging groups 1 and 2
When transporting lithium-ion batteries, not only must the above-mentioned guidelines and regulations be observed, a distinction must also be made between packaging groups. When shipping intact and defective lithium batteries, a distinction is made between packaging group 1 and packaging group 2.
Certified for transportation according to packaging group I
Transport containers and shipping boxes that are certified according to the specifications of packaging group I may contain substances with a high hazard potential. In order to achieve this classification, extensive test requirements must be met and tests must be carried out.
Heat must not be released to the outside
The surface of the package must never become hotter than 100°C, only short-term temperature peaks of up to 200°C are permitted. No flames may form outside the package and no splinters may escape from the package. This is an extremely important test criterion to protect the environment, especially when you consider the extremely hot battery fires caused by defective lithium batteries.
Safety of the boxes is guaranteed by a gas management system
Furthermore, the structure of the package must be maintained at all times and a gas management system must ensure the safety of the boxes. Safety is confirmed by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) on the basis of real tests. All battery transport containers from packaging group 1 can be found here: Packaging group 1 transport boxes for lithium batteries & lithium-ion batteries
Certified for transport according to packaging group II
Shipping containers certified according to packaging group II are approved for substances with medium hazard potential. In order to achieve this classification, many test requirements must be met. For example, the transportation unit, i.e. the container and the lithium-ion batteries inside, must be able to withstand drops of 1.2 m without damage.
Certification by the BAM in real tests
The safety of the transport and shipping containers is confirmed on the basis of real tests by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and the certificate is issued accordingly. All battery transport containers from packaging group 2 can be found here: Packaging group 2 transport boxes for lithium batteries & lithium-ion batteries
Genius Lio Guard transport containers
The manufacturer Genius has developed into one of the leading producers of safe, reliable and attractively priced transport and storage containers for the transportation and storage of lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries. The different versions of Lio Guard containers in particular are among the favorites when it comes to transporting intact or defective/damaged lithium-ion batteries with the highest level of safety and in accordance with regulations.
Lio Guard containers in many sizes and designs
The selection of Lio Guard transport containers is extremely wide, so that a suitable battery box can be found for every need and every type of cargo.
Lio Guard metal transport containers
The metal containers from the Lio Guard series from Genius can hold even large quantities of intact and defective/damaged lithium batteries so that they can be transported safely for recycling. The Classic and LP transport boxes, both series of Lio Guard metal containers, belong to packaging group 1, with which hazardous goods with a high hazard potential may be transported.
Lio Guard plastic transport containers
Plastic battery transport containers are primarily somewhat smaller containers and are therefore particularly suitable for use when not so many hazardous goods need to be transported. Lio Guard plastic containers also generally belong to packaging group 2, meaning that they tend to be used for substances with a medium hazard potential. Compared to the metal transport containers, they are considerably cheaper.
Lio Guard transport boxes for packaging groups 1 and 2
The manufacturer Genius offers battery transport containers for both packaging groups from its Lio Guard range. The Lio Guard transport containers from packaging group 2, which are generally made of plastic, include the Basic, Advanced and Premium boxes, while the Genius boxes from packaging group 1 are models from the Classic and LP lines.
Certified in accordance with ADR special regulations and packaging instructions
Another advantage of Lio Guard battery containers is their extensive range of certifications and applications. Depending on the model, the containers comply with the special ADR regulations SV 310, SV 376 and SV 377, which are so important when transporting intact and damaged batteries. In addition to the special regulations, the packaging instructions contained in the ADR must also be complied with when transporting Li-ion batteries. The Lio Guard containers from Genius can be used to comply with the packaging instructions LP 906, P908, P909, P910 and P911.
Compliant with UN guidelines and other international standards
Due to the hazard potential of defective lithium-ion batteries, cells and battery modules, a large number of norms, guidelines and standards apply in an international context. The various Lio Guard containers from Genius meet these requirements, such as IATA-DGR, ICAO-TI, IMDG and RID. They are also compliant with the UN guidelines UN3090, UN3091, UN3480, UN3481. You can find out which regulations and guidelines are fulfilled by the respective Lio Guard transport containers for defective and damaged lithium-ion batteries in the item details. You can also contact us at any time for more information.
Ideal in combination with PyroBubbles® from Genius
The Lio Guard transport containers from the manufacturer Genius are ideal for use in combination with the Pyrobubbles from Genius. This extinguishing agent for rechargeable battery fires creates a closed and thermally insulating layer around the source of the fire, i.e. the burning lithium-ion rechargeable battery or lithium battery. Even in the event of a chain reaction (thermal runaway), the surrounding area is reliably protected. This means that not only intact, but also defective rechargeable batteries and batteries can be transported without any problems using the Lio Guard containers from Genius.
