The safe storage of lithium-ion batteries is becoming increasingly important in everyday life. The sometimes highly sensitive battery cells are absolutely essential for the mobile use of various devices and vehicles due to their high energy density; at the same time, the stored energy and the structural nature of modern lithium batteries also harbor a variety of dangers that can result in fires and even explosions. Fire-resistant battery cabinets not only offer the possibility of storing lithium-ion batteries safely, but also provide protection in the event of fire. F90-certified, fire-resistant battery cabinets guarantee 90 minutes of safety and are correspondingly versatile. The most important features, properties and possible uses of fire-resistant battery cabinets are therefore explained below:
- Fireproof safety storage cabinets for rechargeable batteries at a glance

Fireproof safety storage cabinets for lithium-ion batteries at a glance
Various products have therefore been developed in recent years for the safe storage of rechargeable batteries and, in addition to fireproof battery boxes, safety storage cabinets have proven to be ideal and versatile for many battery storage applications. The safety storage cabinets have different functions that are highly relevant in this context. They serve as storage cabinets, charging cabinets and fire protection cabinets. Commercial users in particular, who need to store and charge a large number of batteries, are increasingly turning to fire-resistant battery cabinets. If the focus is not on safety during storage, but on the orderly charging of batteries, battery charging cabinets are suitable as an alternative. Although they do not have the extensive fire tests as the models presented here, they are particularly suitable for charging Li-ion batteries in everyday use.
Battery safety cabinets - convenient and safe storage of Li-ion batteries
As the name suggests, safe storage is the main focus of the pure fireproof battery storage cabinets. If the models are only designed for this function, they generally do not have a separate power connection, which would be necessary for charging the batteries inside the safety storage cabinets, for example. The most important feature of these models is their fire resistance, which provides information on how long the cabinets offer safety in the event of a fire. Common classes for this safety feature are 60 minutes (F60) or 90 minutes (F90). The different manufacturers sometimes use different fire test procedures, which should be taken into account when purchasing(details on the fire test procedures for battery-powered safety storage cabinets).
Multiple levels, drip pans and exhaust air systems
Depending on the design, the fire-resistant battery storage cabinets have different storage capacities, several levels for convenient storage of Li-ion batteries and often further safety measures / safety mechanisms. These can be, for example, drip trays to collect liquids that escape from defective lithium batteries, but also exhaust air systems, e.g. to remove fumes in the event of a fire and protect surrounding equipment from damage. Automatic detection systems
Fireproof charging cabinets for lithium-ion batteries
In addition to pure storage cabinets for lithium batteries, there are also charging cabinets that not only enable the safe storage of rechargeable batteries, but are also prepared for charging rechargeable batteries and batteries and have a power connection, for example. These battery charging cabinets are usually equipped with a variety of safety mechanisms due to the potential danger that exists every time a battery is charged: self-closing doors, fire protection class certification and integrated exhaust air systems are just some of the features that characterize battery charging cabinets. This means that even large quantities of lithium batteries can be charged reliably and safely without posing a risk to the environment. Simple battery charging cabinets, on the other hand, generally do not always have a high level of fire protection.
230-volt connections on the storage levels
To enable convenient charging of the batteries within the charging cabinets, there are numerous sockets on the various storage levels. Depending on the model, there are, for example, models with four storage levels and four sockets on each level, so that up to 16 Li-ion batteries can be charged in parallel without any problems.
Optional additional equipment with a power connection
A large number of fireproof battery cabinets can also be adapted to individual requirements by having a power connection installed in the cabinet. The manufacturer Ecosafe, for example, offers optional equipment with up to 4 9-way sockets for the models in its range, so that 36(!) 230V sockets are then easily available in the charging cabinets, where the stored batteries can be charged simultaneously.
Wide range of applications for fireproof battery safety storage cabinets
Safety storage cabinets for lithium-ion batteries are used in many areas and their use will increase significantly in the future as lithium batteries become more widespread. Especially in commercial environments, large quantities of small and medium-sized batteries are often stored, which are best stored and charged in cabinets. The following scenarios are just a small selection of situations in which Li-ion batteries should be stored in appropriate fireproof or fire-resistant safety cabinets.
- Storage of e-bike batteries at bicycle dealers
- Storage of Li-ion batteries from home and garden appliances
- Storage of Li-ion batteries in craft businesses
- Storage of Li-Po batteries in model making
- Storage of golf trolley batteries
Storage of e-bike batteries at bicycle dealers
E-bikes, i.e. bicycles with a Li-ion battery, have experienced a real triumphal march in recent years. What was once the preserve of senior citizens has now become a genuine alternative to the classic bicycle for all age groups, with the result that the proportion of e-bikes sold has risen sharply. Each of these bikes is equipped with a relatively powerful Li-ion battery; modern e-bikes have batteries with capacities of 500Wh and more. For the safe storage of e-bike batteries, bicycle dealers are therefore increasingly using fireproof battery cabinets to minimize the dangers posed by Li-ion batteries and prevent fires that would require a lot of effort to extinguish. If, on the other hand, you only want to store individual e-bike batteries, suitable containers / boxes for e-bike batteries or, for example, fireproof battery bags are also available at.
Storage of garden tool batteries
Not only for bicycles, but also for gardening tools and electrical appliances, battery power is now the norm rather than the exception. Whether it's a battery-powered lawn robot, cordless chainsaw, hedge trimmer with Li-ion battery or even the classic cordless screwdriver - a wide range of lithium batteries must be safely stored (and in some cases also charged) by the dealers of such devices, so that appropriate safety cabinets with optional charging equipment are recommended. A complete safety cabinet is generally too large for individual rechargeable batteries from home and garden appliances, so boxes and storage containers for rechargeable batteries from home and garden appliances are ideal here.
Craft businesses with cordless power tools
In addition to private users, battery-powered electrical appliances are also becoming increasingly popular in the commercial sector, with the focus of these devices being much more on the performance and therefore the capacity of the Li-ion batteries. Whether cordless hammer drills, cordless metal saws or cordless screwdrivers - the devices not only have to provide the necessary power, but also the necessary energy for many hours. The Li-ion batteries used are dimensioned accordingly.
Storage and safe charging of rechargeable batteries
Once the work is done, it must be possible to charge the lithium batteries without much effort and at the same time store them safely, which is why trade businesses are turning to combined solutions: on the one hand, the battery cabinets should offer safety for storage, while on the other hand, the models are also battery charging cabinets so that the lithium-ion batteries are fully ready for use again the next day. Accordingly, battery safety cabinets with an existing power connection are the ideal solution to fulfill both functions, charging and safe storage.
Storage of LiPo batteries in the model making sector
The model making sector has been working with mobile power supplies for a long time. Where previously rechargeable NiCd or NiMh batteries usually provided the energy in the models, today so-called lithium polymer cells (LiPo batteries for short) are normally used, which are much more powerful and can therefore provide many times more energy in relation to their weight. If the LiPo batteries are not used but have to be stored, they pose a significant risk, which dealers in the model making sector can best limit by storing them in safety cabinets. In addition to normal battery storage cabinets, model building retailers also use charging cabinets that also offer the option of charging LiPo batteries. If only individual lithium batteries are to be stored, special boxes / containers and bags for model batteries are also available.
Model flying clubs use battery safety cabinets
In addition to dealers, many model clubs also use charging cabinets to safely store and charge unused LiPo batteries. The members can secure the LiPo batteries from the individual models (usually airplanes, helicopters or model ships, sometimes also vehicles) in the safety cabinets against unauthorized access, while at the same time minimizing the risk of battery fires.
Safe storage and charging of golf trolley batteries in suitable cabinets
Golf trolleys are also increasingly being powered by lithium-ion batteries. Not only do golf trolley batteries usually need to be recharged after a round of golf, but safe storage is also becoming an increasingly important issue for golf course operators. Appropriate storage in suitable safety cabinets is therefore an area that is on the agenda for more and more golf clubs and in some cases is even required by members. Appropriate safety cabinets with an integrated charging function are therefore increasingly to be found in the clubhouses of golf courses.
Buying fireproof battery cabinets / safety cabinets for Li-ion batteries
When selecting a battery cabinet, there are a number of criteria that are decisive on the way to the right safety cabinet and should therefore be taken into account before purchasing or selecting the right battery cabinet. The most important questions that generally play an important role when purchasing fireproof storage cabinets for rechargeable batteries are explained below.
- How many batteries are to be stored in the cabinet?
- What fire resistance should the battery cabinet have?
- Should it be possible to charge the batteries in the safety storage cabinet?
- How many shelves and drawers are required in the battery cabinet?
- Are special safety systems required?
How many batteries should be stored in the cabinet?
The first thing to think about is how large the storage capacity of the safety cabinet should be. If large quantities of Li-ion batteries need to be stored, a cabinet must of course be dimensioned differently than if you only want to store individual batteries. These questions then determine, for example, how large the volume of a battery cabinet must be and which type of cabinet is suitable. Safety storage cabinets designed as free-standing cabinets, for example, have more storage capacity than the underbench models. Similarly, double-leaf safety storage cabinets have more space for LiPo batteries and Li-ion batteries than single-leaf models.
What fire resistance should the battery cabinet have?
Maximum safety is the top priority when storing Li-ion batteries. Accordingly, battery cabinets in the commercial sector generally have appropriate fire resistance capabilities to protect the environment in the event of a battery fire. Many models also offer protection for the stored lithium batteries in the event of a fire in the vicinity of the battery safety cabinet. A common fire resistance class in this area is F90, which means 90 minutes of protection in the event of a fire. Alternatively, there are also models with a fire resistance of 60 minutes (FWF 60). The fire resistance is tested in extensive tests.
Should it be possible to charge the batteries in the safety storage cabinet?
Many customers not only want a pure battery storage cabinet, but also an integrated charging option for the Li-ion batteries and Li-Po batteries. Many models therefore have an integrated power connection to which the chargers inside the cabinet can be connected. The charging process in particular is always a source of danger, so the combination of safe storage and a power connection for charging represents a particularly high level of safety. If the power connection is directly integrated, this is also referred to as a battery charging cabinet; models without a power connection are often called battery storage cabinets.
Retrofitting the power supply is possible on many safety storage cabinets
Many models that are supplied from the factory without a power connection can also be retrofitted, so that a pure storage cabinet can be turned into a genuine battery charging cabinet if this functionality is required. The battery cabinet can be designed to meet individual requirements with the appropriate cable feed-throughs or, for example, built-in socket strips.
How many shelves and drawers are needed in the battery cabinet?
Safety cabinets are usually equipped with shelves and/or drawers for convenient use. This allows the batteries to be stored or charged directly on different levels. Depending on the battery types and the individual usage scenarios, there are battery cabinets with a suitable number of shelves and drawers; for many models, these are also available separately as accessories so that more can be purchased if required.
Are special safety systems necessary?
Depending on the model, the battery cabinets already come with a variety of safety systems designed to minimize the risk in the event of a battery fire. The GDV recommendations for loss prevention in battery storage also include appropriate fire alarm systems for the storage of medium capacity batteries. There are safety cabinets with integrated exhaust air systems, smoke detectors, automatically closing doors and much more.. On other models, the safety systems can easily be retrofitted or are available as additional accessories so that they can be installed at a later date. Nevertheless, it is best to think about which safety systems should be fitted when purchasing the battery-operated safety storage cabinet.
Regulations for battery safety cabinets
Although the use of rechargeable batteries of various types in everyday life continues to increase, there are still no fixed regulations regarding storage and therefore no specifications / requirements for safety storage cabinets. A frequently cited document in this context is the GDV's recommendations on loss prevention when storing batteries, which are not a legal set of rules, but rather recommendations from a single association. To ensure the best possible safety, batteries should ideally be stored in a fireproof environment, in this case in fireproof cabinets, to ensure safety for the surrounding area in the event of a fire.
Individual advice on which cabinet suits your needs
Due to the lack of regulations for the storage of Li-ion batteries, it is difficult to provide general rules or specifications as to which battery cabinet is the best solution in which situation. In order to be able to take the individual circumstances into account in the best possible way, we offer our customers professional advice. Please contact us by phone or email and we will be happy to make you an offer as to which battery safety cabinet best meets your needs.
Storing lithium-ion batteries correctly
Due to their inherent danger, lithium batteries are considered hazardous substances that must be stored accordingly, especially in large quantities. Numerous regulations and laws therefore govern the proper storage of lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries. In addition to the regulations and laws, there are also recommendations for the safe storage of lithium batteries in order to maintain insurance cover, for example - this applies both to the storage of classic e-bike batteries, but also to all other batteries that are used in companies or households.
Storage of intact and defective lithium-ion batteries
On the one hand, special care must be taken when storing intact lithium-ion batteries. When it comes to handling defective batteries, which pose a much greater risk of fire or explosion, even stricter precautions must be taken. Appropriate safety precautions should protect employees from damage caused by battery fires and also protect the surrounding area (e.g. a storage room, business premises, etc.) from the spread of fire or damage caused by a real battery explosion.
Safe storage during the charging process is particularly important
Charging is a particularly critical time for a lithium battery. During the charging process, a battery is always put under a certain amount of stress and heats up. In an intact lithium-ion battery with a functioning charge management system, this is not a problem - sophisticated protective mechanisms ensure that batteries do not overheat and damage occurs during the charging process. However, if one or more battery cells are damaged, charging, especially fast charging with high charging currents, can have serious consequences: The batteries can heat up uncontrollably, leading to the dreaded thermal runway, battery fires or, in the worst case, an explosion of the lithium battery. Safe storage of lithium-ion batteries during charging is therefore of great importance - this naturally applies to charging e-bike batteries as well as other batteries.
Fireproof cabinets for lithium-ion batteries / lithium batteries
The third central function of the battery cabinets is fire protection, which is why the safety cabinets are also referred to as fire protection cabinets / fireproof battery cabinets. Sophisticated and often multi-level safety systems ensure that in the event of a battery fire inside the fireproof cabinet, damage to the environment is avoided and the fire department also has sufficient time to fight the source of the fire and you can take initial fire-fighting measures yourself, for example with a fire extinguisher for lithium-ion batteries or a fire blanket for batteries.
Self-closing doors contain the battery fire inside the cabinet
The first and necessary mechanism of battery fire protection cabinets are the self-closing doors. If one or more batteries become very hot, the doors of the safety storage cabinets close. Depending on the model and design, a thermal reaction is triggered from a temperature of approx. 50°C in the cabinet, for example, which initiates the automatic door closure, which in turn ensures that the doors close automatically. A so-called backdraft lock ensures that the door can no longer be opened. The fire department, for example, can open the doors again using an emergency release on the top of the cabinet.
Automatic closing of the exhaust air systems
Most battery cabinets have exhaust air systems that are designed to dissipate smoke gases. In the event of a fire, these systems are also closed to protect the environment. Depending on the model and design of the battery-powered safety storage cabinet, the exhaust air openings are automatically closed by the safety technology from a predefined temperature.
Fire protection certification F90 / type 90 guarantees 90 minutes of protection
Most fire protection cabinets for Li-ion batteries / fireproof battery cabinets are so-called F90 cabinets, i.e. they have class 90 fire protection certification. This certification means that they provide effective fire protection for at least 90 minutes and protect the surroundings from the battery fire for at least this period in the event of a battery fire. The protection also applies in the other direction: if, for example, a fire breaks out in the vicinity of the fire-resistant battery cabinet, the lithium-ion batteries stored inside are protected from the fire for 90 minutes. In addition to the F90 cabinets, there are also F30 class models that offer 30 minutes of protection.
Further fire protection certifications F60 (for 60 minutes) and for 105 minutes
In addition to the particularly popular F90 battery safety cabinets, CEMO also offers models with F60 certification, for example, which guarantee 60 minutes of fire protection for lithium-ion batteries. The various models in the FWF 60 series from CEMO are among these models. The manufacturer Ecosafe also offers a special feature for the cabinets in the +LI series by guaranteeing 105 minutes of fire protection from the outside.
Fire test procedure for battery safety storage cabinets
Depending on the manufacturer, there are two different fire test procedures for fire-resistant battery safety storage cabinets that are used by the manufacturers for certification: On the one hand, the manufacturers test the fire-resistant battery cabinets for fire protection from the outside to the inside; individual manufacturers also supplement this test with a fire test from the inside to the outside.
Fire test / fire protection from the outside in
If a fire-resistant battery cabinet is tested for fire protection from the outside to the inside, the main focus here is on protecting the lithium-ion batteries from a fire that breaks out in the vicinity of the safety cabinet. The fire test from the outside in therefore provides information on how long the battery is protected from fire in the surrounding area when the lithium-ion battery is stored in the fireproof battery cabinet.
Fire test / fire protection from the inside out
A completely different perspective is taken with the fire test from the inside out: Here, the assumption is that a lithium-ion battery stored in the cabinet catches fire and the environment should be protected from this. Accordingly, the fire protection from the inside to the outside provides information on how long the environment is protected from the battery fire if it is stored inside the fireproof battery cabinet. While all safety storage cabinets generally pass the fire test from the outside to the inside, the fire resistance from the inside to the outside is an additional test that the Düperthal battery safety storage cabinets, for example, have to pass.
Difference between fireproof safety storage cabinets and simple battery charging cabinets
There are basically two different types of cabinets for lithium-ion batteries: The simple and comparatively inexpensive battery charging cabin ets and the fire-resistant safety cabinets offered here. While the former offer an inexpensive way to charge and store a large number of batteries in an organized manner, battery safety cabinets focus much more on the safety factor in order to limit the dangers posed by batteries in particular and are therefore often fire-resistant / fireproof, for example.
Battery charging cabinets: Easy way to store and charge many Li-ion batteries
As the name suggests, battery charging cabinets are primarily intended for the organized and simultaneous charging of many Li-ion batteries. With corresponding power connections (230V, USB or RJ45), several levels, viewing windows and much more, they offer all the equipment needed to conveniently supply a large number of devices with power at the same time. Fire protection, on the other hand, is not taken into account with pure battery charging cabinets, so they do not offer any special protection mechanisms in the event of a battery fire, for example. You can find the complete selection of pure battery charging cabinets here: Charging cabinets for Li-ion batteries.
Battery safety cabinets: focus on fire protection and fireproof / fire-resistant storage
In contrast to battery charging cabinets, fire-resistant safety cabinets focus on fire protection and fire-resistant storage. With comprehensive fire protection certification, self-closing doors, ventilation, etc., they offer a level of safety for the storage of intact and defective lithium batteries, depending on the model. As a rule, however, an essential component is always testing for fire resistance, which is reflected in the designations "F30" or "F90", for example. An F90 fire resistance rating, for example, indicates that the safety storage cabinets can withstand a fire for 90 minutes, while an F30 safety storage cabinet offers this protection for 30 minutes.
Optionally equipped with a power supply, the battery safety storage cabinets can also be used as charging cabinets.
Fire-resistant battery cabinets from Düperthal, Priorit, CEMO and Ecosafe
The market for battery safety cabinets is still rather limited, as the safe storage of Li-ion batteries has only become increasingly important in recent years. Accordingly, there are still only a few well-known manufacturers in this range who have brought cabinets for the storage of Li-ion batteries onto the market and made a name for themselves in a short space of time. Düperthal and Priorit are among the leading manufacturers on the German market in the field of safety storage cabinets in general and storage cabinets for rechargeable batteries in particular.
