Finding the right storage option for Li-ion batteries
The range of storage containers and storage facilities in which lithium batteries can be stored is just as wide as the possible uses and capacities of lithium-ion batteries. From small battery storage containers for individual smartphones / notebook batteries to medium-volume battery containers and large containers for batteries in which even extremely powerful Li-ion batteries can be stored, the market offers suitable solutions for every user and every application scenario.
Battery storage boxes / storage containers
Very often, companies or private individuals are looking for a simple, safe and inexpensive solution to store lithium-ion batteries without having to meet specific requirements. The various boxes and containers are then used - depending on how much storage capacity is required or, for example, the condition of the batteries. Intact cells, for example, can be stored in different boxes than defective batteries, which pose a much greater risk. When selecting the right storage containers for Li-ion batteries, you can choose between different volumes (small, medium-sized and large storage containers), for example, but also according to the material of the storage boxes (plastic battery containers or metal battery containers). If the containers are to be used not only for storage, but also for the transportation of Li-ion batteries, further points must be taken into account when making the selection, e.g. for which packaging group the containers are approved (packaging group I or packaging group II).
Genius Lio Guard boxes for Li-ion batteries
The boxes in the Lio Guard container series are particularly popular for storing Li-ion batteries. The different versions of the battery boxes have become the favorites of many companies when it comes to transporting intact or defective/damaged lithium-ion batteries with maximum safety and in accordance with regulations.
Many models of Lio Guard battery containers
The selection of Genius Lio Guard storage containers is particularly large, so that a suitable battery box can be found for every need and everyone. From the small XS box to the M, Storage or XXL boxes, the manufacturer Genius provides an optimally tailored storage solution for Li-ion batteries for every budget and application.
Zarges K470 battery safe - the versatile container for Li-ion batteries
ZARGES has developed the K470 battery safe as a storage container for lithium-ion batteries. This battery box can be used to transport or store up to three lithium batteries / lithium-ion batteries in accordance with regulation UN3480.
Also ideal for transporting defective batteries
In addition to the storage and transportation of intact lithium batteries, the K470 battery safe from Zarges is particularly suitable for damaged battery cells, which represent a significant source of danger both during transportation and storage. This approval makes this container much more flexible to use than comparable models.
Priorit Priopack and Priosmart storage containers
PRIORIT AG from Hanau has stood for innovative, structural fire protection solutions for 20 years and, with the Priopack and Priosmart, has now also launched containers for the storage of batteries that can be used for many purposes. Attractively priced, the storage containers are aimed not only at commercial customers, but also at private users. The Priosmart charging box for smartphones in particular is a very special solution for storing smartphones in a safe environment while charging.
Fireproof battery bags - ideal for e-bike batteries in particular
The spread of e-bikes is presenting more and more private individuals and bicycle dealers with the challenge of storing the supplied bicycle batteries properly and safely in order to reliably prevent the risk of a battery fire, for example. Specially manufactured battery bags for e-bike batteries offer the ideal way to store e-bike batteries when they are not being used on the bike.
E-bike batteries can be stored in the bags while charging
The fireproof battery bags are not only suitable for storage, they can also be used to store the lithium-ion batteries of e-bikes and pedelecs during the charging process. To do this, the batteries are connected to the chargers, packed in the fireproof bags and the charging cable can be led out through the opening of the bag.
Battery cabinets - for storage and charging
So-called battery safety cabinets offer many advantages over normal battery boxes, especially for commercial users. Not only can a large number of lithium batteries be stored clearly and fire-protected on different levels, a large number of battery cabinets are equipped with a power supply so that the batteries can be charged at the same time and are thus perfectly prepared for the next use. From craft businesses to film production and bicycle rental - battery safety cabinets are the best and most efficient option for storing Li-ion batteries if simultaneous charging is required. If, on the other hand, you only need a pure charging facility without the corresponding safety aspects, simple battery charging cabinets can be an option.
Battery safety garbage cans and drums
When it comes to storing defective batteries, the manufacturer CEMO has a very special solution: the storage and transport drum for lithium batteries can be used to store batteries safely and transport them to the disposal company. Filled with a special extinguishing granulate, the CEMO battery barrel offers all the necessary safety precautions so that even a battery fire inside the barrel would not cause any damage to the environment. Accordingly, the CEMO storage drum for batteries is also certified according to packaging group I, so that even substances with a high hazard potential can be stored and transported.
How to make the battery boxes fireproof / fire-resistant
Comprehensive protection is particularly important for safe battery storage if defects occur within the battery cells, resulting in thermal reactions or even fire. Therefore, for many applications, whether in the private or commercial sector, adequate fire protection is an important criterion for battery storage. There are potentially two ways to achieve fire protection: Either you directly use materials for the fireproof battery storage boxes that are fireproof, or you use additional inserts in the containers that ensure fire protection. Some fire-resistant battery boxes also rely on a combination of both, i.e. fire-retardant inserts (such as Pyrobubbles® or vermiculite® in the form of cushions or bulk material) are used in addition to the non-combustible materials in the containers.
Fireproof or fire-resistant containers for batteries?
Colloquially, storage containers for batteries are often called fireproof, but it would be more correct to call them fire-resistant. The different measures improve the resistance to high temperatures that can occur, for example, during a battery fire. Very few boxes are genuine, fire-resistant battery storage containers that can withstand a fire without damage and for an unlimited period of time.
PyroBubbles® as filling material in the battery containers - PyroBubbles boxes
The majority of the battery containers presented here are not themselves fireproof; the plastic models in particular cannot withstand a fire. Suitable fire protection for the storage of Li-ion batteries is achieved by using specially developed extinguishing granules inside the boxes as filling material. PyroBubbles® from Genius, one of the best-known extinguishing agents for Li-ion batteries, is used in the boxes of the Lio-Guard series, for example. The battery storage containers are filled with PyroBubbles® either directly as granules or in the form of filling pads, in which the lithium battery to be stored is then embedded. These battery storage containers, which are supplied directly with Genius PyroBubbles®, are often referred to as PyruBubbles boxes. Alternative extinguishing granules / filling materials are available from other manufacturers and are known under the names Extover®, Vermiculite® etc.
Protection against mechanical shocks and battery fires
The use of filling materials / extinguishing granules inside the containers has two advantages: On the one hand, the filling ensures that the batteries are optimally embedded and thus protected from mechanical shocks, for example, which are a possible cause of a lithium battery becoming a source of danger. On the other hand, the filling materials ensure that the box is fireproof and that a possible battery fire is fought directly on site and automatically and cannot spread. For example, a burning e-bike battery would be extinguished if it were stored in a storage container filled with extinguishing granulate.
Reinforcing the battery boxes with fire-resistant building boards
In addition to the use of special filling materials, which also serve as an extinguishing agent for battery fires, some manufacturers take further measures to increase the fire resistance of the storage containers and thus meet the demand for fireproof battery boxes. For example, the plastic containers are reinforced with fire-resistant construction panels so that stability is achieved over a long period of time even in the event of a fire. One example is the manufacturer Priorit, which has successfully implemented this concept in the Priopack battery box.
BagteX fabric makes the battery bags fireproof
Specially developed BagteX fabric is used for the battery bags. This not only allows the Li-ion batteries / e-bike batteries packed inside to be stored safely, but the special fabric also has a reliable fire-retardant effect in the event of a fire. If a battery catches fire, the fireproof battery bag inflates and smoke gases are conducted to the outside without sparking thanks to the processed aramid fabric. Additional extinguishing granules and extinguishing agents, such as Pyrobubbles from Genius, which are used with other battery transport containers, are not necessary with the e-bike battery bags. The extinguishing blankets / fire blankets for batteries are based on a similar principle - these are also made from a fireproof fabric and therefore make it possible to contain e-car fires or extinguish e-bike batteries, for example.
The right storage box / battery bag for every battery type
As the use of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and lithium batteries has become an integral part of professional and private life, there are also appropriate boxes and storage options for the different types of rechargeable batteries to safely store the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries when not in use. E-bikes and pedelecs, which are equipped with increasingly powerful batteries, have seen a particularly strong increase in recent years, meaning that owners need suitable and predominantly secure containers or bags for their bikes.
Storing e-bike batteries safely
The share of e-bikes and pedelecs in the number of bicycles sold is increasing all the time and what used to be the preserve of the older generation now knows no age limit. Even mountain bikes, racing bikes and much more are becoming increasingly popular as battery-powered versions. What many owners of e-bikes and pedelecs often forget: With the e-bike battery, you not only get a "built-in tailwind", but also a high-performance power pack with a high energy density that reacts sensitively if stored incorrectly or handled carelessly. Quite a few e-bike batteries have already caused fires and extinguishing battery fires is often problematic. Accordingly, e-bike batteries should be stored safely in order to minimize the dangers of a lithium battery from the outset.
Size and capacity of the battery are crucial
If you are looking for a safe storage option for your e-bike or pedelec battery, two criteria in particular are crucial: On the one hand, the battery must fit into the container, so you need to keep an eye on the dimensions when buying a battery box. The capacity of the battery is just as important. In order to be protected against fire or other problems, the energy absorption of the battery is of great importance, because the more powerful a Li-ion battery is, the greater the potential dangers.
Simple battery bag or robust battery storage box?
If you are looking for a suitable storage option, you will quickly come across two options: On the one hand, relatively inexpensive battery bags are on offer. However, these primarily serve as a simple packaging option and protect the battery from external influences such as weather or dirt. However, these bags generally cannot provide fire protection in the event of a battery defect or the necessary safety from the dangers of a Li-ion battery, or only inadequately. In this case, special storage boxes for e-bike batteries should be used, which are equipped with appropriate granules to ensure safe storage. An alternative to storage boxes and often better for private individuals are fireproof battery bags, which also offer a very high level of protection with the special BagTex fabric, but are not necessarily in the lowest price segment.
Boxes for e-bike batteries / bicycle batteries
Depending on the type of battery to be stored and the number of e-bikes whose lithium batteries are to be stored, different boxes and crates are available, some of which are also fireproof. The Zarges K470 battery safe is an established classic in this area, but other manufacturers also offer suitable storage boxes, such as Genius with the Lio-Guard boxes or Priorit with the Priopack battery storage container.
Fireproof boxes for bicycle batteries / e-bike batteries
With the large selection of boxes for e-bike batteries, a distinction must be made between boxes that are not fireproof on their own (such as the plastic boxes from Genius, Priorit or B&W). However, in combination with extinguishing granules such as Pyrobubbles, these offer efficient fire protection for e-bike batteries. Other boxes, in particular the K470 battery safe from Zarges, are also fireproof in their own right as a metal box. Here too, appropriate extinguishing granules for batteries are supplied, which are then also suitable for extinguishing a burning e-bike battery.
