Safe solution for towing e-cars
The VLITEX Car Service Set Premium M offers an easy-to-use option for ensuring safety when transporting and storing e-cars that have been involved in accidents. The fire blanket set was specially developed for towing services and workshops. The VLITEX Car Service Set Premium is patent-pending, as there is an increased risk of spontaneous combustion over a longer period of time when (accident-damaged) electric cars are being transported.
Tested in the ACTS laboratory
In order to test the suitability of the VLITEX extinguishing blankets in the event of a battery fire, a test was carried out using state-of-the-art measuring methods. The test was carried out in the laboratory of ACTS - Advanced Car Technology Systems GmbH, the competence center for vehicle safety within the Magna Steyr Group.
The extinguishing blanket / fire blanket met all expectations during the test. It is suitable as a heat shield and keeps the temperatures around the burning modules below 200 °C, so that controlled burning out is possible and flooding of the modules is not necessary. In addition, smoke and gases are trapped, whereby the fire blanket / fire blanket also acts as a smoke trap.
The complete test setup and procedure, as well as the observations and measurement results can be found on the manufacturer's website. This link will take you directly to the test.
The certificate can be provided on request.
Multiple protection of the VLITEX Car Service Set
The VLITEX Car Service Set Premium not only allows accident-damaged vehicles to be transported and stored safely, it also retains any leaking liquids. In addition, in the event of an ignition, the surrounding area remains intact and smoke development is significantly reduced.
Properties of the VLITEX Car Service Set
The base material of the fire blanket consists of 560 g/m2 high-temperature glass fiber fabric with a polymer coating on both sides. The connection is made of fire-repellent sewing thread. The fastening straps and handles are made of 560 g/m2 high-temperature fiberglass fabric with a silicone coating on both sides. The straps and handles have a red silicone coating for better identification. The firmly sewn eyelets are made of metal. The set is temperature-resistant up to 750 °C, and even over 1300 °C for short periods, making it suitable for use in battery fires. Please contact us for more information.
The lower blanket with metal eyelets measures 4 x 7 m and weighs 22 kg. The upper blanket with straps measures 6 x 7 m and weighs 27 kg. This results in a total weight of 49 kg.
Use of the Car Serivce sets
The fire barrier set is quickly ready for use and can be used several times. The first step is to spread out the lower part of the blanket set and place the (accident-damaged) vehicle on it. The vehicle is then protected against scratches with the protective fleece (see pictures) and the upper blanket can be placed over the vehicle. The lower cover can then be folded up and lashed together with the fastening straps and metal fasteners.
The individual steps are also shown in the pictures.
Also for preventive use
The cover is also suitable for safely covering endangered vehicles during storage. This means that fires with major damage can be ruled out from the outset.
Advantages of the VLITEX Car Service Set
Conventional fires can be smothered within a few minutes with the extinguishing blanket set. Accidental e-cars can be secured and pose no danger to the environment during transportation or storage. In the event of a battery fire, the fire is kept safely under the blanket and there is no heat impact on the surroundings. Smoke development is also reduced. By raising the lower ceiling, there is no contamination of the environment with toxic liquids or harmful extinguishing agents.
VLITEX - expert in the field of technical textiles
VLITEX has been working in the technical textiles market for over 20 years. The development of innovative products made of technical glass led to the creation of VLITEX fire blankets. A special glass fiber fabric prevents the supply of oxygen. The fire is thus smothered under the fire blanket or kept under control in the case of battery fires. In addition, both the ambient temperature and smoke development are significantly reduced. All VLITEX fire blankets are environmentally friendly, resource-saving, maintenance-free, temperature-, weather- and heat-resistant.
Efficient firefighting of battery fires - increasingly important in the future
The number of electric cars on the roads will continue to increase in the coming years. This will also increase the number of fires involving electrically powered vehicles. This creates a potential risk that should not be underestimated. Even long after a fire has occurred and the e-car has been extinguished, vehicle batteries can re-ignite. The VLITEX Car Service Set Premium M allows accident-damaged vehicles to be transported and stored safely.

VLITEX FAQ / Questions and answers
Are ceiling fabrics or silicone coatings a risk to the environment?
No, the special glass fiber fabrics used are not classified as environmentally harmful or even hazardous substances. The silicone coating also does not release any hazardous toxins into the environment. Furthermore, the silicone itself does not contain any perfluorinated or polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS).
Does the ceiling require maintenance or does it have an expiry date?
No, new ceilings are both weather-resistant and maintenance-free and also have no expiry date. This also generally applies to used ceilings. However, as used ceilings are contaminated with toxic fire residues, they must be stored in such a way that no adverse effects occur.
How often can the ceiling be used?
This depends on the fire load: How long has the ceiling been exposed to what temperatures? Does the ceiling have mechanical damage such as holes or cracks?
If white spots can be seen on the silicone coating, this is a completely normal reaction in which the silicone coating burns into the glass fiber. This does not affect the function of the ceiling.
Even cracks or holes up to the size of a hemp ball have no negative impact on the effectiveness of the blanket.
Are liquids stopped by the fire blanket?
Generally yes, in a test the blanket was flooded with water and it was observed that the water held. Even alkalis or acids cannot harm the fire blanket.
How do you dispose of a fire blanket that is no longer usable?
Before use, the fire blanket can also be disposed of with normal household waste, as it does not contain any substances that require special disposal. After a fire, however, toxic residues adhere to the blanket, which requires professional disposal.
How do I clean the fire blanket after use?
The fire blanket can be cleaned in the same way as firefighter clothing. Fire residues and dirt can be removed with water and a broom in a suitable washing area.
Please note: Fire residues contain toxic substances. Health protection is the top priority, so clean the blanket with the necessary care. Depending on the fire load and damage, it is therefore advisable to dispose of the blanket after a fire.
Can a battery fire be extinguished with the fire blanket?
No, a battery fire cannot be extinguished simply by removing oxygen. The blanket acts as a shield against surrounding objects or the fabric of the building. The smoke development is contained and flames and heat remain under the blanket. It also stops flying debris.
What does "The Premium M fire blanket is certified" mean?
That the material of the fire blanket can withstand temperatures of over 1000 °C. This has been confirmed by an independent, international testing institute. If you need more detailed information, please contact us.
Are sharp edges a problem for the fire blanket?
The blanket is highly tear-resistant. The maximum tensile strength of the fabric is 2,200 N / 5 cm. In theory, a normal car could be suspended from a 1 x 1 m piece of fabric without the material tearing.
However, improper application or removal of the fire blanket can result in damage. It is therefore recommended that you practise putting on and taking off the blanket.
When can I remove the fire blanket after a fire?
This always depends on the application:
A normal fire will be smothered under the blanket after just a few minutes. For safety reasons, however, the blanket should remain over the object for 20 - 30 minutes. To ensure that the temperature under the ceiling has dropped below 200 °C, it makes sense to use a thermal imaging camera. Water can also be used to speed up the cooling process.
If an electric car is on fire, the fire blanket only serves the purpose of preventing the fire from spreading, keeping heat and flames under the blanket and reducing smoke development. A battery fire cannot be extinguished by cutting off the oxygen supply. It is important to keep an eye on the temperature, as battery cells can react and reignite the fire even after many hours.
When towing an e-car that has been involved in an accident, the fire blanket can secure transportation and storage. Should a fire then break out, the surrounding area is protected.
How many people are needed to place the fire blanket over a burning object?
The fire blanket can be carried to the scene by one person in the VLITEX carrying bag. Two people are required at the scene itself to spread out the blanket and pull it over the burning object.
What temperatures can the blanket withstand?
The Premium S fire blanket from VLITEX can withstand temperatures of 600 °C over a longer period of time and up to 1,000 °C at peak temperatures.
The VLITEX Premium M fire blanket was specially developed for battery fires. Battery fires get particularly hot and can briefly exceed temperatures of up to 1,000 °C. Many tests have been carried out to determine whether the blanket can withstand these temperatures. 1.000 °C over longer phases and even 1,300 °C in peaks were no problem. It is even the only fire blanket on the market to be certified: The independent KIWA institute confirms the suitability of the VLITEX Premium fire blanket for battery fires.
What material is the fire blanket made of?
The fire blanket is made of silicone-coated glass fiber fabric.
Unfortunately not. Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are chemical fires that are independent of oxygen. They continue to burn even if they are deprived of oxygen or if you try to extinguish them with water as you would conventionally.
Nevertheless, the fire brigade uses water to cool the burning battery. Even after hours, a battery can ignite again.
The only thing that helps here is a controlled burn-off and fire containment to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding area due to high temperatures or escaping flames.
The name “fire blanket” is common, but misleading. These special, high-temperature-resistant blankets do not extinguish battery fires. What works on the grill does not work on lithium batteries.
With fire blankets, the name says it all: they contain the fire and thus also the damage, giving you time to alert the local fire brigade, who will decide on further fire-fighting measures.

The German DIN SPEC 91489 provides clarity for stakeholders in various industries.
DIN SPEC 91489 contains several requirements for fire-retardant ceilings, the most important of which are listed below:
- General requirements
Properties such as loops, size of the blanket, storage, etc. are mentioned. - Thermal resistance
The DIN SPEC requires a minimum ISO13591-1 classification B. However, the Fire Isolator fire blankets have a higher (the highest) classification: A1. - Mechanical stability
Resistance to cutting, stability of loops, etc. - Electrostatic charge
- Protection against electric shock
- Chemical resistance
- Markings
- Manufacturer information
- Minimum content of the test report
- Training for use by first responders
DIN SPEC 91489 requires that fire blankets can be used quickly and easily by two trained responders wearing personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus.
In the event of a battery fire, such a blanket provides valuable time to alert the fire department and prevent the flames from spreading. This applies to all possible uses, be it a cell phone, a laptop, an e-scooter, a factory robot or an electric car.
This question will be answered by the local fire department, because they are always to be alerted and they initiate further fire-fighting measures.
It is highly dangerous to let a burning electric car burn out under such a blanket and wait until it is all over. A battery fire could last for days and reignite repeatedly. Among other things, the fire produces toxic gases that must be contained as quickly as possible.
The right size of fire blanket depends largely on the size of the burning object and its size. An e-scooter requires a smaller blanket than an e-car or a forklift.
Roughly measure how large the blanket needs to be so that it still lies flat on the ground around the object, with a 1-2m overhang. Don't forget to take the height into account (e.g. SUV). This is the only way to ensure that toxic gases remain under the blanket for the most part and that flames have no chance of igniting the area around the source of the fire.
Here are some examples of common sizes:
Automobiles:
Larger vehicles such as station wagons, SUVs, sedans, forklifts: The fire blanket should be at least 6x8 meters (taking into account the height of the vehicle).
Medium-sized vehicles: The fire blanket should be at least 5x6m in size.
Smaller electric vehicles, e.g. warehouse robots: The fire blanket should be at least 3x4m in size.
Appliances with batteries, such as cordless screwdrivers, garden tools: The fire blanket should be at least 1.5x1.5m in size.
Cell phones and laptops: The fire blanket should be at least 1.5x1.5m in size.
There are also differences in the materials used. The fire blankets differ, for example, in their composition, material thickness and temperature resistance. This is crucial, for example, if the blankets are to be used directly on batteries, not installed, as in vehicles.
When making your purchase, don't forget the weight of the blankets. A large blanket can quickly weigh 25-45 kg. Here, for example, there is the option of storing it in a trolley.
In the event of a fire and the active use of the blanket, no. We strongly advise against it. Firstly, the extreme temperatures can cause damage to the material that cannot be reliably assessed by laypersons. Secondly, fires produce toxic gases that are harmful to health and can adhere to the material.
The ceiling can be used repeatedly for protection if there is no damage.
Here, too, the size and the fire behavior of the object are crucial. An e-bike battery reaches different temperatures than the fire of an electric car.
When an electric vehicle catches fire, temperatures of up to 1,000°C can be reached – and even peaks of 1,200°C for a short time.
Due to the different fire behavior, it is not possible to make an accurate statement about the temperatures that will arise and the duration of the fire.
