The growing number of electric cars on the roads also means an increasing number of fires involving electrically powered vehicles. Even long after a fire and the electric car has been extinguished , vehicle batteries can re-ignite. This is prevented by cooling with water using the Recover-E-Bag. The need for extinguishing water is reduced to a minimum thanks to the customizable contours.

Features and use of the Recover-E-Bag

The Recover-E-Bag is intuitive and easy to use with minimal training. It is quick and easy to position and can be used for all standard car dimensions. The bag can be stored for 8-10 years, requires little space and maintenance and is not subject to a test period. The low extinguishing water requirement of approx. 2500 liters and the consistent extinguishing water retention, in which contaminated water can be retained and disposed of properly, also help to protect the environment. The system is easy to dispose of and requires no further supervision by the fire department, as is the case with extinguishing containers, for example. Thanks to its intuitive color scheme, the handy system can be quickly positioned even in difficult visibility conditions.

Using the Recover-E-Bag to recover electric cars

First, the vehicle must be secured and stabilized. The surface temperature should not exceed 70 °C on average. The Recover-E-Bag can now be prepared behind the electric car. The bag is pulled under the raised vehicle using the lashing straps. Once the vehicle is correctly aligned, it can be lowered into the tarpaulin. The Recover-E-Bag is now secured with the appropriate lashing straps. The recovery system is then filled with water up to the top edge of the high-voltage battery module. The secured vehicle can be transferred in the system to a tow truck, for example.

Take care with live parts, sloping terrain and icy surfaces. Protect the bag from sharp edges and pointed objects, as these can destroy the fabric under certain circumstances. If possible, always wear personal protective equipment during use. In the event of a vehicle fire, the fire department should of course always be called for assistance.

You will find detailed operating instructions under "Downloads".

Wide range of uses

In addition to its use as a recovery and storage system, the Recover-E-Bag can also be used for other purposes. For example, it can be used to retain extinguishing water, as a tarpaulin or as a mobile emergency extinguishing water container for larger fires (e.g. forest fires).
The Recover-E-Bag is versatile and useful in many industries. For example, it is the best solution for fire departments, towing companies, workshops and car dealerships.

Application for electric cars

Electric car fires are a particular focus of applications. These have powerful lithium-ion batteries, which pose a great danger to people and the environment in the event of a fire.

RuGo Bags - specialist for packaging

The family-run company RuGo Bags GmbH stands for high-quality products and innovation. In addition to a wide range of packaging materials for offices and industry, the company also offers shipping, logistics and trade fair construction services. The company has already collaborated with well-known companies in the automotive, hygiene and clay industries, medicine and injection molding technology, the prefabricated house industry and Internet service providers.

Efficient firefighting of e-vehicles - increasingly important in the future

The number of electric cars on the roads will continue to increase in the coming years. This will also increase the number of fires involving electrically powered vehicles. This creates a potential risk that should not be underestimated. Even long after a fire and the acute extinguishing of the electric car, vehicle batteries can re-ignite. This is prevented by cooling with water from the Recover-E-Bag. The need for extinguishing water is reduced to a minimum thanks to the adjustable contours. In addition, the contaminated water is retained and can be disposed of properly.

FAQ
Fragen & Antworten zum Artikel ... mehr
How many batteries can be transported in one container?

That depends on various factors that need to be considered:

  • size of the battery(ies)
  • condition (e.g. non-critical, defective, critically defective or prototype)
  • power

Transport boxes are available in many different sizes and specifications. The packaging group for which the box is suitable is indicated for each product.

Find out more in our blog article:

https://www.lion-care.com/aktuelles/blog/transportvorschriften-regeln-und-sicherheitsmassnahmen

Even if the batteries are not critical, remember to protect them from shocks and to order appropriate filling material if it is not already included in the box.

Do the individual batteries / rechargeable batteries have to be separated by a layer, e.g. PyroBubbles or vermiculite cushions?

Yes. Should a battery reach a critical state and cause a fire, separating the batteries will prevent the fire from spreading and multiplying.

Generally, the insulation and protection material should line all sides of the container. The batteries are stored between individual layers.

We also have containers in our program that already have the protective material integrated into the outer wall. No further protective layer is necessary here.

What is the difference between storage and transportation containers for lithium-ion batteries?

The technical principles for storage and transportation solutions are very similar. The transport boxes are also subjected to extensive tests in accordance with ADR (drop test, fire test, etc.) to confirm compliance with the ADR regulations. The packaging regulations are extensive and regulated by law.
There are currently no comparable regulations for storage. Nevertheless, manufacturers of storage boxes regularly carry out appropriate tests.
The right container depends on the type and size of the battery to be shipped or stored.

If you want to learn more about battery storage and transportation, you will find the answers in our blog articles:

What do you need to bear in mind when transporting lithium-ion batteries?

The transportation of batteries is subject to ADR regulations.

The number, size and weight, energy density and condition of the batteries are crucial parameters for finding a suitable transport container for lithium-ion batteries. The selection process is complex and should be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. We have a trained hazardous materials officer on our team. Please feel free to contact us.

What is the difference between metal and plastic containers?

Plastic containers are cheaper but not as durable as metal containers. They are suitable, for example, for non-critical batteries, defective batteries, prototypes and end-of-life batteries. They can be used for both storage and transportation.

Metal containers are required, for example, when dealing with critically defective batteries.

The exact packaging instructions for these cases can be found in the ADR or by consulting a certified hazardous materials specialist.

What must be considered when storing lithium-ion batteries?

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage of lithium-ion batteries, which does not mean that they should be stored without suitable protective measures.

It is best to check with your insurer to find out which measures they recognize as suitable in the event of a claim.

For example, a suitable box could already be recognized as spatial separation.
