The Lio Guard XS-Box 2 Basic plastic battery transport container presented here is the ideal solution for users who are looking for a reliable way to transport or store lithium batteries / lithium-ion batteries with substance numbers UN3090, UN3091, UN3480, UN3481 in compliance with regulations and the latest standards. In addition to the storage of intact lithium batteries, the Lio Guard XS-Box 2 Classic transport container is particularly suitable for damaged cells, which represent a significant source of danger both during transportation and shipping. The plastic battery containers in the Lio Guard series are ideal for applications such as e-bike batteries, power tools and laptops that use lithium-ion batteries.

Size and capacity of the battery transport container

The Lio Guard XS-Box 2 Basic transport container has a volume of 20 liters and can hold a hazardous goods quantity of 7.5 kg with a maximum size of 300 x 200 x 185 mm. The empty weight is 2.0 kg, with a maximum gross weight of 13 kg. This is the larger of two versions in the XS range of Lio Guard plastic transport containers. According to experience with standard commercial and everyday lithium-ion batteries, the total capacity of all batteries stored in the GENIUS XS-Box 2 Basic should not exceed 0.8 kWh.

Compact dimensions ensure flexibility when storing and transporting batteries

The battery container is extremely handy and flexible to use. With external dimensions of 400 x 300 x 285 mm and internal dimensions of 353 x 253 x 228 mm (length x width x height), the Lio Guard XS-Box 2 Basic transport and storage container is particularly compact and therefore ideal for applications in restricted environments and with a small number of lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the boxes can be stacked up to a height of three meters and therefore only take up a minimal amount of storage space.

Wide temperature range from -20°C to +80°C

The container is made of robust polypropylene and can be used in a temperature range from -20°C to 80°C. However, batteries should always be stored between 15°C and 30°C over a longer period of time

Use battery containers in combination with PyroBubbles®

Individual and expensive transport solutions can be replaced by using this economical and standardized product. The boxes are permanently reusable and are available in Basic, Advanced and Premium versions. The battery storage and transport box is filled with the extinguishing granulate PyroBubbles®, which forms a closed and thermally insulating layer around a fire source.

Delivery includes Pyrobubbles - the battery box is ready for immediate use

This version of the box comes with 23 small PE filling cushions, each weighing 0.22 kg (0.70 liters). The cushions are surrounded by thin, needled polyethylene (PE) film, which dissolves in the event of fire and can thus release the extinguishing agent. Tensioning straps with quick-release fasteners ensure that the lid remains closed. The environment is reliably protected even in the event of a chain reaction (thermal runaway).

Packaging group, special regulations and packaging instructions

Lithium batteries fall into dangerous goods class 9, which means that the goods pose a risk to the environment during transportation that should not be underestimated. Numerous specifications and guidelines must therefore be observed when transporting lithium batteries. The transport boxes in the Lio Guard series have been specially designed to comply with the relevant safety regulations.

Battery container is certified for packaging group II

The containers in the Lio Guard series meet the requirements of packaging group II, which means that substances with a medium hazard potential may be transported in them. To achieve this classification, the box must be type-tested and withstand a drop height of 1.2 m.

Suitable for transportation in accordance with SV 376 of the ADR and packing instruction P 908

All lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium-metal cells or batteries that have been damaged and no longer comply with the applicable regulations according to their manual must comply with the provisions of Special Provision 376 (SV 376). This applies, for example, to cells that have leaked or degassed, have suffered external or mechanical damage or have been identified as defective for safety reasons or could no longer be diagnosed prior to transportation. These cells must then be packed in accordance with packing instruction P 908. According to this directive, for example, it must be ensured that any electrolytes released are absorbed and a non-electrically conductive thermal insulation material must ensure that the environment is protected from dangerous heat generation.

For storage, transportation and recycling in accordance with SV 377 of the ADR and packaging instruction P 909

Special provision SV 377 regulates the transportation of lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium-metal cells or batteries that are transported for disposal or recycling. Similar to packing instruction P 908, guidelines for packing group II must be observed in P 909. In addition, restrictions on the nominal energy and weight of the lithium-ion cells and batteries apply.

Prototype transports according to SV 310 of the ADR and packing instruction P 910

The special provision SV 310 regulates the transportation of prototypes of lithium-ion cells or batteries and lithium-metal cells or batteries. Packaging instruction P 910 then sets out requirements for packaging and the mass of dangerous goods, among other things.

Genius Lio Guard - high-performance transport and storage containers for lithium batteries to the highest safety standards

The XS-Box 2 Basic battery and rechargeable battery transport container presented here is part of the Lio Guard series from Genius, an established manufacturer in the field of safe battery handling for many years. With a large selection of storage and transport containers, the different versions of Genius Lio Guard containers offer a suitable battery box for every user - from the small XS boxes made of plastic to the LP transport containers made of metal, which can also be used for large quantities of defective lithium cells

Differences between the Basic, Premium and Advanced battery containers

The XS-Box 2 presented here is part of the Basic line, which offers a particularly attractively priced entry-level solution for the safe storage and reliable transportation of lithium batteries. Genius also offers Premium and Advanced boxes.

Basic-Line battery boxes - attractively priced

The Basic-Line boxes from Genius offer an attractively priced entry into the field of safe battery storage. In combination with the matching Pyrobubbles, lithium batteries can be stored reliably and in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Premium-Line battery boxes - for even more stability and safety

The Premium-Line battery boxes from the Lio-Guard series from Genius are characterized by a powder-coated steel insert embedded in the box. A 10 x 10 mm grid is incorporated into the base of the steel insert so that the battery cells stored in the box are kept away from the outer walls of the box. In the Premium Line, this steel insert cannot be removed.

Advanced Line battery containers - for particularly efficient handling

The Advance Line boxes offer maximum efficiency when handling lithium-ion batteries. Here, a powder-coated steel basket is embedded in the container which, unlike the Premium Line containers, is removable, making it much easier to fill and remove the lithium-ion batteries.

The manufacturer of the battery box - the Genius Group

The Genius Group is one of the leading manufacturers of solutions for the safe transportation of intact and damaged lithium-ion rechargeable batteries / lithium batteries. With the Lio Guard transport containers and the Pyrobubbles® in particular, the manufacturer Genius recognized early on that the safe storage and protected transport of battery cells is becoming increasingly important and has developed solutions that provide a suitable product for companies of all sizes. Sustainable fire protection concepts and innovative extinguishing systems have been at the heart of Genius' business activities since the company was founded.

Safe storage of lithium-ion batteries - increasingly important in the future

Lithium-ion batteries will be indispensable in all industrial applications in the coming years. However, if used improperly, batteries can pose a potential hazard during production, storage and transportation that should not be underestimated. By purchasing these storage and transport boxes for Li-ion batteries, you can protect yourself against major financial losses right from the start. International customers from the automotive and energy supply sectors, among others, rely on this proven technology.

VdS 3103 : 2019-06 (03) - Lithium batteries

To date, there are no legal requirements for the storage and provision of lithium batteries in public spaces.

The following publication provides recommendations for preventing damage when providing lithium batteries in production and storage areas. It describes the most important findings from fire tests on the subject of storage and provision.
